Mercedes hasn’t appeared in the big leagues since the 2022 season, but the memory of his remarkable homer barrage for the White Sox at the outset of the 2021 campaign still linger. The 31-year-old is unlikely to make it back to the big leagues at this point in his career.

Mercedes wound up appearing in 31 games for the Giants during the 2022 season, slashing .233/.325/.342 with one homer, eight RBI and a 17/9 K/BB ratio over 83 plate appearances. The 29-year-old backstop shouldn’t have much difficulty landing a minor league deal and a spring training invitation elsewhere if he chooses to remain stateside.

Mercedes has lost his 40-man roster spot but has cleared waivers and will remain in the organization.

Mercedes started at first base for San Francisco on Tuesday night and went 0-for-3.

Mercedes is starting at first base and batting third on Tuesday night against the Padres. He could see regular action down the stretch with Brandon Belt (knee) and Joey Bart (concussion) out indefinitely.

Mercedes heads back to the minors with utility infielder Thairo Estrada returning from the 7-day concussion injured list. The 29-year-old slugger has hit .243/.338/.357 with one homer over 80 plate appearances this season in the majors.

Yermin Mercedes hit two hard singles on Saturday, and his 103.4-mph base knock in the bottom of the third plated the Giants’ second run of the night. Mercedes is 15-for-53 (.283) with a home run to start his second major-league campaign.

With two runners on in the fourth inning Mercedes knocked a single off Tyler Anderson to drive in the Giants’ only run of the game. The 29-year-old is hitting .243/.333/.405 with one homer across 42 plate appearances.

Mercedes got his huge night started with an RBI double against Dallas Keuchel in the first inning. He would follow up that double with a two-run home run in the second inning (again off Keuchel). Putting a cap on this fine performance, Mercedes drove in his fourth and final run of the game via an RBI ground out in the eighth inning. Through 27 at-bats this season, the 29-year-old backstop has picked up eight hits, four of which have gone for extra bases.

Mercedes will join the Giants with Thairo Estrada landing on the COVID-19 injured list. It’s unknown how long he’ll be up with the club. He’s gone 8-for-23 with three homers with Triple-A Sacramento.
