With such a commanding lead of the Connecticut Sun, Mystics head coach Sydney Johnson was able to test how best to use his plethora of versatile bigs in Austin, starter KiKi Iriafen and Aaliyah Edwards. He tried Austin at both the four and five spots throughout the afternoon, and she scored while playing both positions. Her five scores all came when her front court partner was either well spaced beyond the arc or moving off the ball to create space. On Sunday Austin flashed her guard-like handle and high release point on her jumper. Like the Seattle Storm, the Mystics have an overstuffed front court, which begs the question if Washington might be able to move one of their bigs including veteran Stefanie Dolson before the August 7 trade deadline.

Jones rejoins the Liberty’s starting lineup — which includes Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, Leonie Fiebich and Natasha Cloud for Friday night’s game in Washington against the Mystic — following a one-game absence due to hamstring discomfort. Jones’ status will come down to the wire after missing Thursday night’s home game against the Valkyries with right hamstring discomfort. Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello said in a pregame presser that Jones will go stretch, go through her warmup and then tell the coaching staff how she feels afterward. The Liberty missed her paint production and rebounding in the Liberty’s 82-77 win over the Valkyries. New York only scored 18 points in the paint and got out rebounded 41-36. Washington has a plethora of post players and size in rookie KiKi Irafen, Shakira Austin, Stefanie Dolson and Aaliyah Edwards that without Nyara Sabally and potentially Jones could be a lot for New York to handle.

There’s a chance she’s available for Wednesday’s game, which would leave the Mystics with a logjam in the frontcourt. Aaliyah Edwards made her season debut on Sunday, which cut into Stefanie Dolson’s playing time. Austin returning could mean even fewer minutes for Dolson, limiting her fantasy value.

Edwards made her season debut on Sunday after missing the first four games with a lower back contusion. As expected, the second-year forward was not asked to take on a full workload against the Mercury, but she was effective as a rebounder and the shooting percentages were good. Starting center Stefanie Dolson only played 16 minutes, finishing with two points (1-of-6 FGs), one rebound and one assist, while Sika Koné (four points and five rebounds) logged nine minutes off the bench. As Edwards shakes off the rust, look for her to play starters’ minutes, which would come at the expense of Dolson and Koné.

Sykes is back after sitting out Friday’s close loss to the Aces. Her return means Jade Melbourne will head to the bench, resuming her regular backup point guard duties. Also of note is the availability of Aaliyah Edwards, who has been cleared after missing the first four games with a lower back contusion. The frontcourt starters have not changed, but Stefanie Dolson’s playing time may decrease with Edwards in the fold.

With the Mystics embracing a rebuild, rookie Kiki Iriafen’s playing time should not be significantly impacted.

Regardless of what the Mystics decide, fantasy managers should not expect to see Edwards take on a full workload in her debut.

Dolson put together her best showing of the early 2025 season, flirting with a points-assists double-double in the close loss to the Aces. The veteran center was a plus-18 in 29 minutes and controlled the game despite making only three shots. She functioned extremely well on offense when away from the basket, picking apart the Aces with her passing and drilling them from beyond the arc if a defender wasn’t near enough. Dolson’s role could vary depending on which of her teammates are in or out of the lineup. But with Shakira Austin and Aaliyah Edwards out on Friday, Dolson delivered.
