Mercury guard Megan McConnell sustained a right knee injury with 1:43 left in the fourth quarter in the game Tuesday night against the Lynx.
McConnell left the game against the Lynx on Tuesday night with 1:43 left in the fourth quarter. After getting a steal and driving the ball the other way with 1:46 left in the fourth, McConnell was tripped up going the other way and banged her right knee against Lynx forward Alissa Pili. McConnell held onto her knee in pain and as a result had to be carried off the floor. The Mercury announced earlier on Tuesday that they signed McConnell to a rest of the season contract after previously waiving guard Sevgi Uzun. If this injury is as serious as it looked, Phoenix will have to rely upon more minutes from facilitating wing Haley Jones coming off the bench.

    Mercury waived G Sevgi Uzun.
After starting 19 of the 40 games she appeared in with the Dallas Wings last season, Uzun joined the Mercury this offseason as part of a 10-team trade. While the 27-year-old guard played rotation minutes off the bench in each of her seven appearances, Uzun averaged just 1.6 points and 2.0 assists in 14.6 minutes. Phoenix’s decision to waive Uzun comes one day after the team signed Haley Jones to a contract.
  • Monique Akoa Makani (knee) is available for Sunday’s game against the Mystics.
As was the case before Friday’s loss to the Storm, Akoa Makani has been upgraded to available after appearing on the Mercury’s initial injury report. She’ll retain her place in the starting lineup, with Sevgi Uzun as the primary backup at point guard. While Akoa Makani can be rostered in deeper leagues due to her positive start, Uzun can remain on the waiver wire.
  • Monique Akoa Makani shot 5-of-9 from the field and 1-of-1 from the foul line, tallying 14 points, two rebounds, two assists, one block and three three-pointers in Friday’s loss to the Storm.
Despite dealing with a left knee injury that landed her on Phoenix’s pregame injury report, Akoa Makani had the best game of her first week in the WNBA on Friday. The rookie guard shot 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, finishing with a career-high point total and logging 23 minutes. Akoa Makani has surpassed 20 minutes in her last two appearances, which has limited reserve Sevgi Uzun’s opportunities off the bench. Uzun played 12 minutes on Friday, finishing with two points (1-of-3 FGs), one rebound, two assists and three steals.
  • Monique Akoa Makani (knee) is probable for Friday’s game against the Storm.
After her best outing as a WNBA player, Akoa Makani is on the Mercury injury report for Friday’s game with a left knee injury. The good news is that she’s considered probable, so the rookie guard should be in the starting lineup in Seattle. If Akoa Makani cannot go, Sevgi Uzun is one Mercury player who may be asked to do more, potentially as a starter. There would also be more opportunities for Alyssa Thomas to serve as a primary playmaker.

Sevgi Uzun (face) accumulated two points (1-of-4 FGs), two rebounds, two assists and one steal in 14 minutes in Wednesday’s win over the Sparks.
Uzun took a shot to the face during the first half of Wednesday’s game. While the Mercury did not make an official announcement regarding her injury, the rookie guard returned to action during the third quarter wearing a protective mask. While Uzun has not impacted fantasy basketball thus far, a potential absence would make a difference for the Mercury, who will be without Kahleah Copper (knee) until mid-June.
