15dRachel Banham amassed 10 points (2-of-5 FGs, 4-of-4 FTs), four assists and two three-pointers in Sunday’s loss to the Dream.

After watching his team commit 20 turnovers in Saturday’s blowout loss to the Mercury, Sky head coach Tyler Marsh made a change to the starting lineup. Banham was in on Sunday, with Kia Nurse (two rebounds and two assists in 12 minutes) moving to the bench. While the change did not result in a Sky victory, the team only committed nine turnovers on the day. Banham was not responsible for any, and her presence in the starting lineup appeared to benefit Ariel Atkins, who scored a season-high 29 points. While Chicago continues to bring Hailey Van Lith (two points, one assist and one steal in eight minutes) along slowly, Banham may be the best choice to start alongside Ariel Atkins. At least until Moriah Jefferson (leg; DNP-CD on Sunday despite being cleared) is allowed to play rotation minutes.

Point guard Jefferson has been battling an injury this entire season as the only game she’s played was on May 10 in the preseason when she played in 7 minutes against the Lynx. Since Courtney Vandersloot has been out with a torn ACL, the Sky have played more of Ariel Atkins at the point guard spot along with Rachel Banham and Hailey Van Lith.

Jefferson remains out for another game due to a leg injury that has kept her from playing at all this season. With Courtney Vandersloot (knee) done for the season, Ariel Atkins has shifted into the point guard role, with rookie Hailey Van Lith providing depth off the bench. That setup should continue for the foreseeable future.

While her experience may land the latter in the starting lineup, it would be unsurprising if the struggling Sky decided to go with Van Lith instead.

While Jefferson was reportedly available to make her season debut on May 29 against the Wings, the veteran guard did not play. She also missed the rematch two nights later, and her leg injury remains an issue. Hailey Van Lith will stay in the backup point guard role, with starter Courtney Vandersloot playing most of the available minutes at the position.

Jefferson is available to make her season debut Thursday night, providing Chicago with much-needed depth at point guard. With Hailey Van Lith also available, starter Courtney Vandersloot won’t be asked to play as much after logging 71 minutes in Chicago’s last two games. Jefferson may not get the minutes needed to impact fantasy basketball, however, so she is not a must-roster player in most leagues.

Jefferson has yet to appear in a game this season. And with Hailey Van Lith missing Chicago’s last two games with an ankle injury, the Sky have asked starter Courtney Vandersloot to play heavy minutes in their absence. Chicago heads into Thursday’s game with a 0-4 record, most recently losing to the Mercury on Tuesday.

Jefferson has missed Chicago’s last three games with a leg injury, while Sunday’s loss to the Sparks was the first missed by Van Lith. Getting one (or both) of Jefferson or Van Lith back for Tuesday’s game will help lighten Vandersloot’s workload.

Coming off a career-high six assists vs. the Liberty on Thursday, Van Lith will be sidelined for the first time in her young WNBA career when the Sky take on the Sparks. The 11th overall pick of the 2025 draft has seen action in each of Chicago’s two games thus far, posting averages of 4.0 points and 3.0 assists in nearly 10.0 minutes per game. With Moriah Jefferson (leg) also ruled out against Los Angeles, the Sky will rely heavily on their veteran guards, Courtney Vandersloot and Ariel Atkins, to provide shot creation.
