12hBrittney Sykes willed the Mystics to Thursday night’s 70-68 last-second win over the Aces. finishing with 18 points (7-of-15 FGs, 3-of-4 FTs), two rebounds, four assists, and one three-pointer in 35 minutes of play.

The last time Sykes scored over 15 points was on June 20, so her team-leading performance on Thursday night was a return to form. Per usual, Sykes feasted in the paint, scoring 10 of her 18 total points within key. She was mostly guarded by Chelsea Gray. Sykes drew two and-one scores on Gray. With 1:17 left in regulation, Sykes made a tough 17-foot jumper over the outstretched arms of Megan Gustafson. The Vegas defense prevented her from getting to her kill zones, but it didn’t matter. Sykes elevated and got the Mystics within one point before Shakira Austin’s go-ahead bucket moments later.

2dBrittney Sykes accumulated 11 points (5-of-12 FGs, 1-of-3 FTs), four rebounds, four assists and two steals in Tuesday’s win over the Sky.

Having endured a three-game stretch in which she scored 21 points on 6-of-25 shooting from the field, Sykes took a step in the right direction Tuesday afternoon. The double-digit scoring effort was her first since June 20, when the veteran guard scored 20 in a win over the Dream. Sykes missed two games with a leg injury, which may have factored into her recent struggles. Also, she played 32 minutes on Tuesday after logging 26 and 23 minutes in her first two games back.

12dBrittney Sykes finished Saturday’s loss to the Wings with six points (3-of-8 FGs), four rebounds, five assists and one steal.

Back in action after missing two games with a leg injury, Sykes struggled offensively on Saturday. Due to the combination of her absence and the matchup, the veteran guard’s performance was not surprising. In Washington’s June 22 win over the Wings, Sykes was limited to eight points on 1-of-8 shooting from the field. The Mystics don’t play again until July 3 against the Lynx, giving Sykes more time to recover from the leg injury that kept her out of the lineup. Lucy Olsen also struggled on Saturday, missing all five of her shots and going scoreless with two rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes.

Sykes is available after missing two games with a leg injury, giving the Mystics a welcome boost. Since her replacement in the starting lineup, Jade Melbourne, is unavailable due to a mouth injury, Sykes will slide back into her usual role.

Sykes has missed Washington’s last two games with a leg injury, resulting in Jade Melbourne moving into the starting lineup. However, Melbourne suffered a mouth injury early in Thursday’s win over the Aces, resulting in rookie Lucy Olsen logging 38 minutes. If Sykes and Melbourne cannot play, look for Olsen to fill the void.

Sykes’ absence on Thursday will mark her second straight, as well as the second time this season she hasn’t suited up against the Aces. The Mystics will certainly miss Sykes, who is their leading scorer (19.6 points per game) and passer (4.8 assists per game), but are a tough team that has proven capable of winning games without her. Jade Melbourne replaced Sykes in the starting lineup against Minnesota and could be in line for additional opportunities in the veteran guard’s absence.

16dSug Sutton stepped up in the fourth quarter during Tuesday night’s 68-64 win over the Lynx accumulating 12 points (5-of-12 FGs), one rebound, four assists, four steals and two three-pointers in 35 minutes of play.

Without Brittney Sykes (leg) available on Tuesday night, one of the Mystics guards had to step up, and that was Sutton. While her field goal percentage didn’t scream the same efficiency that Sykes typically does, Sutton’s scores were in pivotal moments. She made a couple of threes in situations that helped the Mystics extend their lead. She had four steals, with the final two resulting in scores on the other end. With 32 seconds remaining in regulation and the game tied at 64, Sutton scored the winning basket at the other end off a turnover she created while guarding Lynx point guard Courtney Williams.

Due to a lower right leg injury, Sykes will not be available for Washington’s first matchup of the season with the league-leading Lynx. Regarding production and leadership, not having Sykes is a significant issue for the Mystics. Jade Melbourne, who played 18 minutes off the bench in Sunday’s overtime win over the Wings, should figure more prominently in the rotation, and there may also be additional minutes for rookie Lucy Olsen.

Sunday’s performance was Sutton’s best of the season, as she recorded highs in points and three-pointers. The Mystics’ guard did not miss a shot from the field against the Wings, scoring in double figures for just the fourth time this season. In Sutton’s previous three games, she totaled 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting. Her performance against the Wings was well-timed, as fellow starter and Mystics’ leading scorer Brittney Sykes (8/1/4) shot 1-of-8 from the field. Sutton’s showing on Sunday does not make her a must-add in fantasy leagues, but she’s worth tracking for now.

20dBrittney Sykes amassed 21 points (5-of-10 FGs, 10-of-11 FTs), five rebounds, eight assists, two steals, a block and one three-pointer in Friday night’s 92-91 loss to the Dream in 35 minutes of play.

Sykes stuffed the stat sheet for the Mystics, mixing up hunting her own shot making while facilitating at a high level. Her comfort finding Shakira Austin in advantageous spots on the floor kept the Mystics in the game when other facets of their offense were hard to come by. On Friday night Sykes took 11 free throws, and she continues to maintain her status as the player in the league averaging the most attempts and makes per game. The only free throw Sykes missed on Friday night was with 0.1 of a second left in regulation, a free throw that could have tied the game up and taken it to overtime.
