Willians Astudillo has signed with the SoftBank Hawks of Nippon Professional Baseball.
La Tortuga will head to Japan for the 2023 season. The 31-year-old super-utility specialist got into 21 games last year for the Marlins, hitting .241/.255/.296 with one homer and one steal in 55 plate appearances. Astudillo rarely strikes out, has logged time at nearly every position on the diamond, and has emerged as a fan favorite the last few seasons. Simply put, we’re rooting for him to make it back to the majors again.

Willians Astudillo has elected free agency.
La Tortuga will head back to the open market after serving as a depth option for the Marlins during the 2022 season. He wound up appearing in 21 games with the big league club, hitting .241/.255/.296 with one home run, four RBI and a 3/1 K/BB ratio over 55 plate appearances. The free-swinging 30-year-old will have to settle for a minor league contract this winter.

  • INT Catcher #37
Marlins sent C/INF Willians Astudillo outright to Triple-A Jacksonville.
Astudillo passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment last week and will remain with the Marlins as organizational position player depth. The 30-year-old backup infielder and catcher has hit .241/.255/.296 with one homer, four RBI in 55 plate appearances this season in the big leagues.

  • INT Catcher #37
Marlins designated C/INF Willians Astudillo for assignment.
The 30-year-old fan favorite appeared in 21 games with the Marlins, slashing .241/.255/.296 with one homer, four RBI and a 3/1 K/BB ratio in 55 plate appearances. He always seems to attract interest in waivers, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see another club put a claim in for him.

  • INT Catcher #37
Marlins selected the contract of C/INF Willians Astudillo from Triple-A Jacksonville.
Astudillo returns to the Marlins after Brian Anderson was placed on the 10-day injured list. The 30-year-old was designated for assignment in June, but passed through waivers and remained with the club.

  • INT Catcher #37
Marlins sent C/INF Willians Astudillo outright to Triple-A Jacksonville.
Astudillo passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment earlier this week and will remain with the Marlins as an extra utility infielder and part-time catcher. The contact-oriented 30-year-old hit .270/.289/.351 with one homer in 38 appearances this season during his time in the majors.

  • INT Catcher #37
Marlins designated C/INF Willians Astudillo for assignment.
The Marlins are waiving Astudillo despite him hitting a respectable .270/.289/.351 with one homer across 38 plate appearances. There’s a chance he could get another opportunity with another club should he get claimed.

  • NYY Center Fielder #13
Jazz Chisholm Jr. is getting the day off on Saturday against the Astros.
There’s zero reason for concern as it’s a routine scheduled off day for Chisholm Jr., who homered twice in Friday’s win over the Astros. It’ll be Willians Astudillo getting a start at second base in his absence. Seriously. The dynamic 24-year-old infielder is hitting .259/.314/.559 with 12 home runs and 10 stolen bases across 189 plate appearances this season. He should be back for Sunday’s series finale in Houston.

  • INT Catcher #37
Willians Astudillo went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI against the Rockies in the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.
Astudillo should be in line for a fair amount of playing time while both Brian Anderson and Joey Wendle are on the IL for the Marlins, though perhaps not beyond that. He remains one of the league’s most interesting hitters, in that he makes so much contact and hardly ever strikes out, but there’s probably no long-term fantasy value here.

  • FA Third Baseman #15
Brian Anderson was scratched from the Marlins’ starting lineup Saturday due to lower back spasms.
Anderson is undergoing further evaluation and there should be an update on his status shortly. Jon Berti takes over in center field with Bryan De La Cruz shifting to right field and Willians Astudillo entering the lineup at second base. Yes, you read all of that correctly.
