Miami sophomore QB Tyler Van Dyke completed 16-of-32 passes for 138 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Saturday’s 45-31 loss to Middle Tennessee.
Van Dyke completed 50% of his passes and tossed two interceptions before being benched in favor of backup Jake Garcia. After entering 2022 as a dark horse Heisman candidate, Van Dyke has done anything but played up to the level of a Heisman trophy winner. Through four games, Van Dyke has thrown for just 809 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions, and has now struggled in back-to-back games that both ended in Miami losses. Once ranked as the No. 5 quarterback of the 2023 draft class by NFL Mock Draft Database, one has to think Van Dyke’s fall after this game could put him out of the top 10 at his position. If he loses the starting job to Garcia for the remainder of the season, we could be putting any discussions about Van Dyke as a draft prospect on hold until the 2024 draft. We’ll wait and see what happens with him in the coming week, but there’s not much to hang our hat on at this time.

Miami redshirt sophomore QB Tyler Van Dyke faces a tough test in Week 3 against No. 24 Texas A&M.
Van Dyke and the Hurricanes are off to a 2-0 start with their wins coming against Bethune-Cookman and Southern Mississippi. Now, Set to hit the road for the first time in 2022, Van Dyke and the Hurricanes face a much more difficult test against the Aggies. Fresh off an upset loss at home against Appalachian State, Texas A&M will be gunning for Van Dyke in a desperate attempt to get right before the start of SEC play. Van Dyke has been solid through two games, throwing for 446 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, but he hasn’t been asked to do much against inferior opponents. Assuming he declares for the 2023 NFL Draft, Van Dyke will find himself in one of the better quarterback classes in recent memory. A good showing at Texas A&M could mean big things for him next spring, as he looks to garner first-round buzz.
