Free agent CB Trae Waynes said he’s “done” playing football.
Waynes, 30 next month, was the 11th overall pick in the 2015 draft by the Vikings but never landed a second contract in Minnesota and spent the last two seasons with the Bengals. He started 79 career games, breaking up 43 passes and intercepting seven. He missed 28-of-33 games the last two years in Cincinnati. “Honestly, in my head, I’m done,” Waynes said Monday. “I’m not officially doing it just because I don’t give a (expletive).” Waynes seems like he’d be open to keep playing but hasn’t drawn any interest after being released in March.

    Bengals released CB Trae Waynes.
Waynes joined Cincinnati after playing out his rookie deal with the Vikings. The former first-round pick signed a three-year, $42 million contract with the Bengals but a torn pec kept him from taking the field in 2020. Then a hamstring injury held him out for all but five games last year. He was mostly ineffective when healthy. Waynes allowed 9.5 yards per target and was only credited with one pass defense. The second injury-plagued season all but assured his release. Waynes could sign somewhere else on a prove-it deal and look to ink a more substantial contract next offseason.

Bengals activated CB Trae Waynes from the reserve/COVID-19 list.
Waynes and receiver Trenton Irwin were both on the COVID list but practiced today meaning they will be activated once transactions process. Waynes has only played four games this year because of a hamstring issue. He has eight combined tackles and no other stats.

Bengals activated CB Trae Waynes (hamstring) from injured reserve.
Waynes appeared in just two games this season and hasn’t played since Week 5. His return comes at a good time with the Bengals dealing with a COVID outbreak. Bengals fourth-round OL D’Ante Smith has also been activated from IR, while WR Trent Taylor, LB Austin Calitro, and LB Keandre Jones have been elevated from the practice squad to the active roster.

Bengals placed CB Trae Waynes (hamstring) on injured reserve.
Waynes re-injured his hamstring in Sunday’s loss to Green Bay. Fortunately, S Jessie Bates will be available to make his triumphant return in Week 6 against Detroit. Waynes has been an all-time free agent bust since joining the Bengals, making two appearances after he signed a lucrative three-year, $42 million contract last offseason.

Bengals CB Trae Waynes (hamstring) practiced in full on Tuesday.
Waynes still hasn’t played a game for Cincinnati after signing a three-year, $42 million deal in 2020. However, he is on track to make his debut on Thursday against the Jaguars. It would be a welcome sight for Bengals fans, especially considering Jessie Bates and Chidobe Awuzie are banged up.

Bengals declared WR Trenton Irwin, CB Trae Waynes, CB Nick McCloud, OG D’Ante Smith, OT Fred Johnson, and DT Tyler Shelvin inactive against the Bears.
CB Darius Phillips and LB Markus Bailey were listed as questionable, but both will play against Chicago. Waynes still hasn’t appeared in a game for Cincinnati despite signing a $42 million deal last summer. Allen Robinson and Darnell Mooney draw a nice matchup against a below-average Bengals secondary.

Bengals CB Trae Waynes (hamstring) won’t play in Week 1 against the Vikings.
Waynes has yet to play a game for Cincinnati since striking a three-year, $42 million deal with the organization last offseason. Eli Apple, who was cut from both the Panthers and Raiders for conditioning reasons last year, will instead be on the field and assigned either Justin Jefferson or Adam Thielen in coverage. It’s a disastrous development for a defensive unit that was already facing an uphill battle in talent discrepancy.

Bengals placed CB Trae Waynes (pectoral) on injured reserve.
Cincinnati added CB Torry McTyer to the active roster to take Waynes’ place. The move was expected after Waynes, a big offseason free agent signing, underwent surgery to repair a torn pec. He’s expected to miss much of the 2020 season. The Bengals should have one of the weakest secondaries in the NFL, making them a prime target for opposing quarterbacks and pass catchers. The Chargers get the first crack at Cincy’s depleted secondary.

Bengals CB Trae Waynes underwent surgery to repair a torn pec and is expected to miss most of the 2020 season.
Signed to a three-year, $42 million deal in March, Waynes was expected to handle starting duties opposite William Jackson. Waynes was someone teams picked on early in his career, but he eventually came into his own with the Vikings before landing the big-money deal from Cincinnati. Fellow free-agent pickups Mackensie Alexander and LeShaun Sims could be asked to play bigger roles on defense with Waynes out indefinitely.
