Cardinals re-signed LHP Tommy Layne to a minor league contract.
Layne signed a minor league deal with the Cardinals this past June and went on to post a 1.35 ERA and 34/4 K/BB ratio in 26 2/3 innings at Triple-A Memphis. He logged 216 appearances in the majors between 2012-2017. The 34-year-old lefty reliever could get a real look in camp next spring.

Tom Layne registered his first career save with a perfect inning in Wednesday’s win over the Pirates.
Layne got a groundout and a flyout before getting Pedro Alvarez looking to end the game. Dale Thayer had pitched in two straight games and blew a save Tuesday, but it’s not clear if he was unavailable or if manager Bud Black just wanted to change things up. Layne, 27, has allowed just two baserunners and no runs while striking out eight in his first 4 1/3 big league innings.

Padres purchased the contract of LHP Tom Layne from Double-A San Antonio.
He’ll take the roster spot of Alex Hinshaw, who was designated for assignment. Layne, 27, had a 3.28 ERA and 36/16 K/BB ratio over 35 2/3 innings with Double-A San Antonio this season and figures to pitch in middle relief.

Padres recalled LHP Tom Layne from Triple-A Tucson.
Layne has a 3.32 ERA in 19 innings for the Padres since debuting in the majors last year. He was used as more of a specialist in 26 appearances last season, but since Joe Thatcher is healthy, the Padres figure to use him in longer stints now.

Padres optioned LHP Tom Layne to Triple-A Tucson.
Layne was only in the majors for a couple of days. The southpaw should get another shot later this summer.

Layne, 28, had a 4.00 ERA and 13/12 K/BB ratio in 18 innings over 19 appearances this season in Triple-A. He’ll function as a second left-hander out of the bullpen.

Padres optioned LHP Tom Layne to Triple-A Tucson.
Layne did a nice job in his first six outings of the season, compiling a 1.59 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 4/0 K/BB ratio in 5 2/3 innings of work. He’ll continue to serve as bullpen depth at Triple-A until another injury strikes the Padres’ bullpen.

Padres recalled LHP Tom Layne from Triple-A Tucson.
Layne posted a 1.59 ERA and 4/0 K/BB ratio in 5 2/3 innings during his first stint with the Padres earlier this season. He figures to pitch in middle relief.

Padres optioned LHP Tom Layne to Triple-A Tucson.
The move, coupled with Kyle Blanks also being optioned to Triple-A, drops the Padres down to their requisite 25-man roster for Opening Day. The 28-year-old lefty struggled mightily this spring, posting a 9.90 ERA, 2.30 WHIP over his 10 innings of work. He’s likely to see time with the Padres bullpen at some point in 2013.
