Packers signed P Tim Masthay to a four-year, $5.465 million contract extension.
Masthay was set to earn $540,000 in 2012, the final year of his contract. Instead, he’s locked up through 2016 and gets a $1.2 million signing bonus. Last year, Masthay ranked just 22nd in net punt average (38.6 yards) and 17th in punt average (45.6 yards).
  • Coach Mike McCarthy singled out P Chris Bryan as someone who impressed at rookie camp.
Bryan, an Aussie who has been playing Australian Rules Football, will battle Tim Masthay for the Packers punting gig.

    Packers released P Tim Masthay.
Masthay has been the Pack’s punter since 2010, but they’ll move forward with Jake Schum, who was claimed off waivers on Tuesday. Masthay was due $1.2 million after coming in 14th in net-punting average last season. He’ll get calls whenever someone needs a punter.
  • The Packers’ punting battle between Chris Bryan and Tim Masthay will not be decided until preseason games.
Since neither competitor has any NFL experience, handling nerves is going to be a big part of the job. That can’t be replicated in practice. It’s also possible that the Packers will find a veteran to come in and challenge for the job during camp.

Tim Masthay likely won the Packers’ punting job with a booming 53-yarder in Thursday’s exhibition game.
Masthay’s punt drove Brandon James so far back that he muffed it and the Packers recovered for a touchdown. Meanwhile, Chris Bryan’s first punt went just 38 yards and had 3.44 seconds of hang time.
  • Packers waived P Chris Bryan.
This means that Tim Masthay has won the punting gig, as expected. Masthay slammed the door with a booming 53-yarder in the Packers’ third preseason game.
