Once considered one of the better pitching prospects in the Arizona system, Widener hasn’t put it together at the highest level; although he did register a respectable 3.73 ERA in his 17 2/3 innings with the D-Backs in 2022. He’s off the 40-man roster to make room for the recently acquired Diego Castillo.

The right-hander will take the place of Tommy Henry on the club’s active roster after Henry was optioned to Triple-A. The 27-year-old hurler holds an uninspiring 9.64 ERA, 2.36 WHIP and 3/2 K/BB ratio over 4 2/3 innings with the big league club this season. He’ll function in the middle innings for manager Torey Lovullo.

Widener has been sent down to make room for lefty Tyler Gilbert to make a spot start Tuesday against the Reds. The 27-year-old righty has allowed five runs on nine hits with a 3/2 K/BB ratio across 4 2/3 innings (four appearances) this season at the big-league level.

The 27-year-old hurler has made three appearances with the big league club this season, posting a 6.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and 2/1 K/BB ratio across three frames. He’ll add depth in the middle innings for the Diamondbacks.
