Arsenal, Man City shine, Newcastle draws, Man United loses thriller as UEFA Champions League group play returns: Scores, video highlights as they happened

Matchday 1 in the UEFA Champions League is complete after a goal-filled Wednesday of group-stage action

Why Kane is the focus of Bayern Munich v. Man Utd
Joe Prince-Wright, Andy Edwards and Nick Mendola preview Bayern Munich's Champions League group stage matchup against Manchester United.

The UEFA Champions League group stage is here, and Premier League sides Newcastle United and Manchester City kicked off their tournaments on Tuesday with a draw and a win respectively.

Newcastle struggled at the San Siro but emerged with a scoreless draw with AC Milan and a valuable Nick Pope-inspired point in a brutal group that saw Paris Saint-Germain control Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at the Parc des Princes.

And Man City overcame a scare to beat Red Star Belgrade 3-1 after the visitors scored on their first shot of the game — in the 45th minute — but took only three of the match’s 40 shot attempts. Julian Alvarez scored twice after halftime and Rodri also scored in the win.

Elsewhere, a Calvin Stengs free kick inspired Feyenoord to a 2-0 win over Celtic, Lazio struck late to draw Atletico Madrid, and PSG controlled Dortmund 2-0 while Barcelona, Porto, and RB Leipzig secured multi-goal wins.

Below you’ll see scores and video highlights as they happened in eight matches around the UEFA Champions League.

Ivan Provedel goal video — Watch Lazio’s keeper deliver stoppage-time equalizer

Textbook header from a non-textbook figure, as Lazio goalkeeper delivers a remarkable ending to the club’s home match with Atletico Madrid.

FULL TIME around Europe

Lazio strikes at the death to claim a point against Atletico Madrid in Rome, but the other ties had been done-and-dusted for some time.

GOAL — Alireza Jahanbakhsh — Feyenoord 2-0 Celtic

Feyenoord have totally taken hold of this match since the break and now have a second goal to show for their control.

It’s former Brighton man Alireza Jahanbakhsh who is on the score sheet from a half with 70% Feyenoord possession.

Celtic has seven shots and 0.29 for the game and just one and 0.02 have come in the second frame.

GOAL — Rodri — Man City 3-1 Red Star Belgrade

That shock Red Star Belgrade goal before halftime feels like it was scored in invisible ink.

Man City finds its third as Rodri cruises into the box and scores a classy curling finish across goal and his body.

3-1, 74'

GOAL — Julian Alvarez — Man City 2-1 Red Star Belgrade

Red Star goalkeeper Omri Glazer has been terrific but this is a huge gaffe.

Julian Alvarez has a brace now, as his free kick is swept toward the back post and Glazer — who had authored nine saves to this point — missed the ball with his punch.

It sails inside the far post and the celebrations are a bit sheepish.

That said, the shots are now at 26-2 and Man City has 80% possession. Deserved.

GOAL — Achraf Hakimi — PSG 2-0 Borussia Dortmund (video)

Now we’ve got a score line befitting PSG’s control.

Achraf Hakimi and Vitinha work a pretty bit of play around the BVB box, and the former coolly finishes past Gregor Kobel to double Les Parisiens’ lead.

What a goal.

2-0.

GOAL — Gavi — Barcelona 4-0 Royal Antwerp (video)

We’ll probably cool it with the Barca updates, because this one’s done and dusted.

Gavi picks up a lay-off about 16 yards from goal, touches closer to goal and lashes a vicious finish inside the near post.

4-0.

GOAL — Kylian Mbappe — PSG 1-0 Borussia Dortmund

PSG has found its breakthrough at home, and will feel it had been coming.

It’s Kylian Mbappe from the penalty spot, and Dortmund trails 1-0.

Mbappe moves level with Sergio Aguero for 19th all-time in Champions League goals, with 41.

GOAL — Julian Alvarez — Man City 1-1 Red Star Belgrade (video)

What footwork from Julian Alvarez!

Twenty-two first half shots without a goal was a European record, but it turns out Man City just needed Shot No. 23.

Erling Haaland rolls Alvarez in on goal, and the Argentine touches past the keeper to score from an acute angle.

1-1.

Calvin Stengs free kick goal video — What a hit

Celtic probably feel it should be leading in the Netherlands.

The Bhoys aren’t because of one of the Dutch’s best young stars.

Calvin Stengs, take a bow.

HALFTIME — Six 3pm ET kickoffs

Manchester City 0-1 Red Star Belgrade — Man City reaches halftime holding 79% possession and a 22-1 shots margin, but Red Star Belgrade is 1-of-1 on shots. Also, Bernardo Silva limped off late.

Feyenoord 1-0 Celtic — Calvin Stengs puts Dutch hosts up late in first half.

Lazio 0-1 Atletico Madrid — Young midfielder Pablo Barrios, 20, has three goals in his Atleti career after bagging the lone goal of this first half.

Paris Saint-Germain 0-0 Borussia Dortmund — It’s been all PSG but the hosts have only asked BVB keeper Gregor Kobel to make a single save (He did).

Barcelona 3-0 Royal Antwerp — A goal and an assist for Joao Felix.

Shakhtar Donetsk 1-3 Porto — Terrific entertainment as Mehdi Taremi joins a Wenderson Galeno brace for the visitors.

GOAL — Osman Bukari — Man City 0-1 Red Star Belgrade

It’s difficult to be as dominant as Manchester City’s been against Red Star while also failing to score a goal.

It’s even harder to trail, but that’s where City is at halftime following a stunning 45th minute break against the run of play from Osman Bukari.

The Ghanaian was initially ruled offside but VAR proved the linesman’s decision incorrect.

And some injury to add to the insult here, as Bernardo Silva limped off late in the half. Jeremy Doku’s taken his spot.

UPDATE — Man City 0-0 Red Star Belgrade

Man City’s taken the first six shots of their home match with Red Star Belgrade, but it’s still scoreless.

The latest is a Phil Foden chipped pass from the left that sails over a host of Red Star players.

There to meet it is Erling Haaland, but the Norwegian pounds his header off the cross bar.

GOALS — Robert Lewandowski, own goal — Barcelona 3-0

It’s 3-0 in the 23rd minute and this could be a long day for the minnows.

Barca’s scored twice on three shots, the second goal coming from Robert Lewandowski in the 19th minute before the Blaugranas coax an own goal out of Royal Antwerp to make it 3-0.

Lewandowski played his part in Joao Felix’s opener and now the living Polish legend is there to do the finishing himself.

The Champions League’s third all-time leading scorer now has 92 goals in the competition.

GOALS — Kevin Kelsy, Galeno — Shakhtar 1-2 Porto

We could be in for a crazy one in Ukraine.

Nineteen-year-old Kevin Kelsy gets Shakhtar level with the visitors in the 13th minute, but don’t blink.

Galeno’s scored again, this time in the 15th minute, as Porto has a 2-1 lead.

GOAL — Joao Felix — Barcelona 1-0 Royal Antwerp (video)

Joao Felix’s Barcelona loan — Barce-loan-a, amirite? — is going swimmingly.

After playing 10 minutes away to Osasuna in Week 4, Felix has made two starts and scored two goals at the Camp Nou.

He bagged one against Betis on Saturday and now he’s put Barca in front of Royal Antwerp. Ilkay Gundogan scoops up the assist.

GOAL — Wenderson Galeno — Shakhtar 0-1 Porto (video)

Always follow the ball.

FULL TIME — Young Boys 1-3 RB Leipzig

Slovenian youngster Benjamin Sesko scored deep in stoppage time to complete a 3-1 score line that is relatively fitting to the game.

The hosts had 55% possession but Leipzig out-attempted Young Boys 21-8 and won the expected goals fight by a gaping 2.18-0.47.

It’s seemingly a race to claim the second spot behind Man City, and both sides will keep their eyes on the 3pm ET kickoff between the reigning UCL champs and Red Star Belgrade at the Etihad Stadium.

Here’s Sesko’s goal:

FULL TIME — AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

Full recap, analysis, player ratings here.

The Magpies played like a team looking for a point and will leave with one, so Eddie Howe can’t be upset with the draw.

AC Milan, however, will feel they’ve wasted a chance to get three points in a brutal group, especially with the chance to be above PSG and/or Borussia Dortmund after one match day.

Milan did everything but score, out-attempting the visitors 25-6 and having 3-4 very dangerous chances. Nick Pope finished with eight saves while Newcastle failed to put a single shot on target until Sean Longstaff’s effort in stoppage time.

The Magpies saw a first-half possession advantage dwindle to 47% by the final whistle and will hope for much better against — checks notes — Paris Saint-Germain at St. James’ Park in two weeks time.

GOAL — Xaver Schlager — Young Boys 1-2 RB Leipzig

Leipzig is back in the lead!

Xaver Schlager, the ex-Wolfsburg and Salzburg midfielder, takes a layoff and a set-up touch well outside the 18.

He tries his luck with a low bounding shot that makes its way through traffic and beats YB goalkeeper Anthony Racioppi.

UPDATE — AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

Milan has two Americans on the pitch now with Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah both helping the hosts to set up dangerous moments.

Milan’s shot total is 19-4, but the second half has been much closer between the Serie A side and its Premier League visitors.

15 minutes to play here!

Giovanni Reyna makes the bench for Borussia Dortmund

Giovanni Reyna could finally make his season debut for Borussia Dortmund.

The 20-year-old hasn’t played since setting up two goals for the USMNT in a 2-0 win over Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League Final on June 18, 2023.

He’ll be on the bench for BVB at PSG. Consonants.

Kickoff at 3pm ET. Updates here.

Manchester City lineup out vs Red Star Belgrade

Matheus Nunes will step into the Starting XI for Pep Guardiola, while Sergio Gomez also plays from the opening whistle.

Josko Gvardiol, Jeremy Doku, Kalvin Phillips and Manuel Akanji are among the bench options.

Kickoff’s at 3pm ET. We’ll have updates here.

HALFTIME — Young Boys 1-1 RB Leipzig

The hosts have really grown into this game and have 58% possession at the break.

Leipzig has the xG edge, 0.71-0.17, but both teams have found the goal and there’s the cliche ‘everything to the play for at Stadion Wankdorf.

HALFTIME — AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

Eddie Howe will hope halftime — and maybe some changes — will give his Champions League new boys the chance to calm down and get into the game.

The Magpies have been out-attempted 15-1 despite 55% possession, and the xG reads 1.59-0.12 in favor of the hosts.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has four shot attempts for Milan, and Tomasso Pobega three. Nick Pope has six saves, and it’s still 0-0.

UPDATE — AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

Milan is producing all of the danger at the San Siro, and Newcastle will be grateful if it can get to the team rooms level.

Milan took the match’s first 15 attempts before Anthony Gordon had a quarter-chance blocked in the 38th minute.

Nick Pope has six saves.

0-0, 39'

GOAL — Meschack Elia — Young Boys 1-1 Leipzig (video)

Meschack Elia has Young Boys level!

The 26-year-old Congolese star has a go from the top of the box and it’s too much for Leipzig goalkeeper Janis Blaswich.

Filip Ugrinic uses a deft touch off a cross to find Elia, who settles it and rips home for very nice 18-yard goal.

1-1 in Switzerland in the 33rd minute.

CHANCE — AC Milan — Milan 0-0 Newcastle

Nick Pope’s suddenly busy and is thrice asked to deny Milan.

First is Tommaso Pobega’s rip from distance. Pope has to dive to his right to make a save, and the ball is crossed back into danger.

Pope denies Samuel Chukwueze, and Milan’s soon back in the Newcastle end where the keeper has to stop Olivier Giroud’s in-tight effort.

It’s out for a corner, and more danger! But Newcastle gets the clearance.

GOAL — Mohamed Simakan — Young Boys 0-1 Leipzig (video)

Mohamed Simakan has Leipzig on the board early!

David Raum drives a left-footed corner kick toward the front post and Simakan stoops to nail the header.

It’s 1-0 to the Bundesliga visitors after just five minutes!

Young Boys vs RB Leipzig team news

Young Boys are unbeaten in Swiss Super League play, winning thrice and drawing twice to sit a point behind Zurich with a match-in-hand.

They’ve been led by Jean Pierre Nsame, Cedric Itten, and Joel Monteiro. The first two names start while Monteiro begins the day on the bench,.

Leipzig has won three times and lost once — to leaders Bayer Leverkusen — in the Bundesliga to sit third in Germany’s top division.

Lois Openda and Xavi Simons lead the team with three goals, while Simons has four assists. The Barcelona product and PSG loanee starts in the midfield behind Openda and Danish star Yussuf Poulsen.
