Wojciech Szczesny has signed a contract extension with Arsenal, committing his long-term future to the club. The 23 year old goalkeeper joined the Gunners in 2006, made his debut in 2009 in a League Cup victory over West Bromwich Albion, and has already made 121 appearances for the club. Szczesny became a regular between the sticks in the 2011/2012 season, during which he played every Premier League match, and, despite a couple rough patches, is now certainly first choice for the Arsenal.

In recent weeks, speculation had increased as to whether Arsenal were looking to target a new keeper. Rumors abounded about the club wanting to pursue the likes of Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas and Aston Villa’s Brad Guzan. Instead, they’ve secured Szczesny with a long-term deal, and there’s no doubt the Pole is relieved: “I am very pleased to have signed a new contract. Arsenal is like my family and I’m so happy to be committing my long-term future here.”

Gunners manager Arsène Wenger said: “We’re very pleased Wojciech has signed a new long-term contract. I have always believed he is an extremely talented player, with excellent reflexes and good mental strength. He continues to grow and improve all the time too, so he has the potential to be even better. He can be an important part of Arsenal Football Club for many years to come.”
