West Ham 0-0 Everton: Lackluster Hammers held by Pickford

West Ham were denied a late winner by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford as the home fans booed their team off the pitch at London Stadium.

WATCH FULL REPLAY

Everton were the more dangerous team for most of the game but Crysencio Summerville hit the post and Jordan Pickford made some big saves and twice denied Danny Ings late on as the Hammers pushed for a winner.

The draw means West Ham have 12 points for the season, while Everton have 10.

Pickford the star as West Ham labor

A trip to the dentist would have been more enjoyable for West Ham fans on Saturday. They watched their team fail to attack in the first half and only a late flurry of chances papered over the cracks of an extremely poor display. Everton were decent on the counter and looked dangerous but couldn’t get the final pass right, while at the other end Pickford was superb late on. He denied Ings twice and was commanding in his area as Everton look set to go back to the model which saw them stay up comfortably last season. Sit back, defend, let Pickford pull off great saves, and then we will score from a counter or a set-piece. The last bit is a struggle right now. It is for West Ham too, as they were booed off the pitch in each half and sit just five points above the relegation zone with almost a third of the season gone. That is not how it was supposed to be after a summer of big signings and Julen Lopetegui arriving as boss. The Spanish coach is under serious pressure and has some very tough games coming up.

West Ham vs Everton live updates! - By Joe Prince-Wright

Full time: West Ham 0-0 Everton

West Ham pushed hard for a winner late on but they just got going way too late. Pickford made some superb stops.

Pickford denies Ings, twice

Substitute Danny Ings cuts inside and curls towards the far post but Pickford gets down well to save. That is a really good stop. Then in stoppage time Ings drills it into the ground and it’s flying in but Pickford makes a wonderful save.

Beto is on for Calvert-Lewin

Forward Beto has been excellent off the bench in recent weeks. Can he be a late hero?

Summerville hits the post!

A big chance for West Ham as he slot is low towards the far corner but his effort hits the post. Great ball from Paqueta to pick him out. The Hammers have finally woken up.

Everton doing all the pressing as West Ham struggle

Mykolenko goes close and Everton are asking all the questions and pressing higher up the pitch. Mangala slices a shot wide soon after. West Ham looking very shaky at the back and the home fans are getting on their back. Lindstrom also forces Fabianski to tip his header over.

Half time: West Ham 0-0 Everton

Boos ring out from the home fans as the half time whistle goes. That was really poor from West Ham. They barely got going in attack and Everton looked dangerous on the counter.

First chance for West Ham

It only took nearly 44 minutes, but West Ham have their first attempt on goal. Antonio surges towards goal and sets up Bowen. His powerful shot at the near post is pushed away by Pickford. Good stop.

Absolutely nothing going forward from West Ham

The home fans are growing frustrated as West Ham are so slow on the ball and have barely had a kick in the final third. Everton sense it and are looking dangerous on the counter.

Doucoure with a big chance on the break

Everton break free and Doucoure is played in but West Ham block his shot superbly and Calvert-Lewin fires the rebound over. A glimpse of how dangerous Everton can be on the counter.

West Ham lineup

Fabianski; Wan-Bissaka, Todibo, Kilman, Emerson; Rodriguez, Soucek; Bowen, Paqueta, Summerville; Antonio

Everton lineup

Pickford; Young, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Mangala, Gueye; Lindstrom, Doucoure, Ndiaye; Calvert-Lewin

West Ham team news, focus

Kudus has just had his suspension for being sent off at Tottenham extended by two games, while Mexico’s Edson Alvarez was sent off for the second time this season with another reckless challenge while on a yellow card at Forest. So he’s out too. West Ham are dangerous going forward but have looked so suspect at the back as only Wolves and Ipswich have conceded more goals than them. Lopetegui has struggled to find the right formation and combinations across the pitch as he switched to three at the back against Forest and that went woefully. He will probably start Antonio, Bowen and Paqueta in attack this weekend for some experience and cohesion.

OUT: Niclas Fullkrug (calf), Mohammed Kudus (suspension), Edson Alvarez (suspension)

Everton team news, focus

The Toffees are organized and dangerous on the counter and from set pieces and you know what you’re going to get with a Sean Dyche side. This seems like the week that Beto finally gets the start over Calvert-Lewin up top, as the towering forward scored a late equalizer against Fulham in their last home game and hit the bar, had a goal disallowed for a narrow offside and caused chaos against Southampton last time out. His last two sub appearances prove he deserves to start. The rest of Everton’s side is settled, with Doucoure perhaps coming back into midfield to provide some extra steel and attacking impetus.

OUT: Armando Broja (calf), Youssef Chermiti (ankle), Dele Alli (groin), Timothy Iroegbunam (ankle), James Garner (back) | QUESTIONABLE: Iliman Ndiaye (thigh), Abdoulaye Doucoure (undisclosed), Seamus Coleman (thigh), Dwight McNeil (knee)

West Ham vs Everton prediction

This feels like a game where Everton will make the most of West Ham’s defensive shakiness. Especially on the counter. West Ham 1-2 Everton.

West Ham vs Everton preview

Media reports suggest that West Ham will review Lopetegui’s position after this game, as he’s almost a third into his first season in charge of the Hammers and they’ve picked up just 11 points and three wins so far. West Ham were hammered 3-0 at Nottingham Forest last weekend as a real lack of defensive discipline has hurt them all season long. Lopetegui will be desperate for a win to showcase he is the right man for the job, as the players appear to be struggling with too much change after the settled David Moyes era.

Everton sit two points behind West Ham after their 1-0 defeat at struggling Southampton last weekend. Sean Dyche has had a long-term issue with Everton not finishing chances and that has been the case once again this season. They need a victory before the international break to calm down lingering fears that they will be dragged into another relegation scrap this season. This game could be set up perfectly for them to cause chaos on the counter.
