News of the fatal heart attack spread among the Dortmund fans and supporters in the south stand stopped singing during the game as a mark of respect. The entire stadium followed suit and one of the most atmospheric venues in world soccer was near silent for the remainder of the match.

Dortmund released a statement informing fans of the sad news:

“During the game two tragic incidents occurred in the stadium in which two fans had to be revived. One person unfortunately didn’t make it and has died. We are full of grief and our thoughts are with the families. From the hospital we have received news that the second person is apparently in stable condition.”

After the game, the fans at the Wetsfalenstadion decided to sing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” in unison, as the Dortmund players also gathered in front of the fans and linked arms as they paid their respects.
