USA exits U-17 World Cup after five-goal thriller with Germany

The U.S. U-17 youth national team exited the World Cup with a terrific effort in a 3-2 loss to undefeated Germany that saw two equalizers, a lot of possession, and a late concession at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in West Java, Indonesia.

Gonzalo Segares’ Baby Yanks were bidding to reach the quarterfinals of the U-17 World Cup for just the second time in 18 years, having appeared in seven out of eight tournaments in that span.

Taha Habroune (Columbus Crew) and David Vazquez (Philadelphia Union) answered goals from Charles Herrmann (Borussia Dortmund) and Max Moerstadt (Hoffenheim) with equalizers in the 24th and 80th minutes before Hamburg’s Bilal Yalcinkaya settled the game with an 87th-minute winner.

The loss saw the Americans hold 66% possession in chasing equalizers for most of the match, out-attempted just 14-13 by the heavily-favored Germans. The U.S. went 2-1 in the group stage, losing 3-0 to France for its lone loss and faring much better in the Round of 16 despite the same outcome.

The U-17 Yanks’ lone quarterfinals appearance, since going back-to-back in the last-eight in 2001 and 2003, came in 2017 when a team led by future senior regulars Timothy Weah, Josh Sargent, and Sergiño Dest made a deep run until they came up against England, the eventual winners, in the quarterfinals.

This time around, Segares’ team was headlined by Liverpool youngster Keylor Figueroa — son of former Honduras international Meynor— Charlotte FC forward Nimfasha Berchimas (three goals), and San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Cruz Medina. The Baby Yanks beat South Korea and Burkina Faso before the blowout loss to France in the finale, finishing 2nd in Group E.

The U.S. U-17 team has been to the World Cup semifinals just once, when Landon Donovan, DaMarcus Beasley, and Kyle Beckerman were the up-and-coming stars all the way back in 1999.
