Union’s Zach Pfeffer given 2nd game for elbow, Manneh also suspended

The MLS disciplinary committee has been busy this week.

While it somewhat shockingly passed over the Perry Kitchen stamp, Philadelphia midfielder Zach Pfeffer received a two-match ban for his vicious elbow to the head of FC Dallas midfielder Mauro Diaz this past weekend.

Pfeffer was already on a yellow at the time, and he flew out of control into Diaz with his elbow held high right in front of the referee. It sent Diaz to the ground almost instantly clutching his head, and the referee saw it clear as day, immediately going to his pocket to send Pfeffer off and signaling that it was for the elbow.

The 20-year-old was also fined an undisclosed amount for the 41st minute incident, plus an additional fine for failing to leave the pitch in a timely and orderly fashion. The sending off automatically incurred a one-match ban, and the disciplinary committee tacked on another for the severity of the incident, which they referred to as “violent conduct.” Here is video of the play:

Also suspended was Vancouver winger Kekuta Manneh, who went two-footed studs up on Orlando City’s Aurelien Collin after a heavy touch allowed the ball to get away from him. Manneh was only given a yellow card in the match (much to the complete and utter shock of Collin) but the disciplinary committee determined that the tackle was “serious foul play that endangered the safety of an opponent” and they handed down a one-match suspension.
