Jupp Heynckes may have “retired” after his incredible campaign at Bayern Munich, but it looks like he hasn’t retired just yet.
According to France Football, Bayern Munich midfielder Anatoliy Tymoshchuk said on Russian television, “There is a 99-percent chance Jupp Heynckes will be the next manager of Real Madrid.”
After being shoved aside at Bayern for the highly-touted Pep Guardiola, Heynckes will now get a second shot at leading Real Madrid as he looks set to replace Jose Mourinho.
The German took charge of Los Blancos for a single season back in the late 90’s, and although he triumphed in the Champions League to end a 32-year drought for Madrid in the competition, he was fired for finishing fourth in the league.
It’s been a similar story for Heynckes wherever he goes, getting a seemingly raw deal. This year at Bayern helped to alleviate previous shortcomings at the German giants, and now he’ll have a chance for similar redemption in Spain.
PSG’s Carlo Ancelotti was also heavily in the mix, even requesting (unsuccessfully) to be released from his contract at PSG so he could be considered for the job at Madrid.
Heynckes is very familiar with the landscape of Spain’s Primera Division. In addition to his one previous season at Real Madrid, he also spent two seasons in charge of Athletic Bilbao on two separate occasions.
