Tottenham 2-1 Manchester City: Spurs knock City out of League Cup

Few managers need a big win (and a trophy) like Ange Postecoglou. He got the former on Wednesday against a second-choice but game Manchester City, defeating the 8-times champions by a 2-1 score at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Timo Werner and Pape Sarr scored pretty first-half goals, and Matheus Nunes’ first-half stoppage-time marker turned out to be City’s only route to the scoreboard.

Now Tottenham Hotspur are 360 minutes from the club’s first major trophy in 16 years, while City are denied one of their targets for the season.

The win is not without losses, as Micky van de Ven, Timo Werner, and Cristian Romero left the game early with injuries. City was also affected by injuries, as Savinho was carried off the pitch.

This wasn’t a first-choice City team, as at least two lesser-known players were on the field at all times. City started Nico O’Reilly and James McAtee and finished with Jacob Wright and Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, while Erling Haaland and Manuel Akanji were unused subs in addition to the side’s lengthy injury list.

Tottenham vs Manchester City live updates, final score: 2-1

Timo Werner 5', Pape Sarr 25', Matheus Nunes 45+4'

Huge block by Spurs!

It’s the 19-year-old Wright who tears into a close-range shot with Guglielmo Vicario was out of the goal.

But Yves Bissouma makes a strong block on the line to keep it 2-1, now in the 89th minute.

Richarlison can’t finish Gvardiol error

A poor throw from Josko Gvardiol put Richarlison 1v1 with Stefan Ortega but the Brazilian snaps the ball right to the keeper.

Still 2-1 Spurs against a City side who have had kids on the field at all times. Richarlison better hope Spurs hold onto this lead.

Timo Werner injury

The game’s opening goal scorer appears to have a groin injury. He’ll come off.

Mikey Moore and Richarlison both enter for Spurs, with Brennan Johnson joining Werner in leaving the contest.

2-1 Spurs, 68'.

Cristian Romero, Savinho injuries

Savinho needs help getting off the field at the hour mark, and that’s one to watch for a City side which has suffered through its fair share of absences early this season.

Spurs had already lost Cristian Romero earlier in the second half. Ben Davies took his place.

Matheus Nunes goal! Tottenham 2-0 Man City (45+4')

Savinho cues up the Portuguese midfielder to pull one back before halftime.

Pape Sarr goal! Tottenham 2-0 Man City (25th minute)_

Oh, that is a pretty sight.

Spurs play a corner short and Kulusevski gets it to Pape Sarr 30 yards out.

Sarr swirls a shot around the wall and that curves just inside the near post.

Micky van de Ven injury

The Dutch back, playing left back on the day, cannot continue in what could be a huge loss for Spurs.

Timo Werner goal! Tottenham 1-0 Man City (5th minute)

How’s that for early?

Dejan Kulusevski floats in a cross from the right and Timo Werner puts it home, making it look too easy.

City trail.
