Toni Kroos has been awarded the title of Germany Player of the Year for 2014.

Both goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and Miroslav Klose were also in contention for the honors, but German fan club “Nationalmannschaft” decided to elect Kroos as the main man.

Current Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has claimed the award in the past three years before the 25-year-old Real Madrid footballer claimed the title with 40.6 percent of the vote, roughly 1.9 percent greater than the runner-up Klose.

Ballon d’Or finalist Neuer was unable to gain a great deal of votes surprisingly, finishing with only 6.6 percent of the total vote count. However, it’s really been the goalkeeper’s performances during his 2014 club tenure (not necessarily international) that’s captured the footballing world’s attention with respect to the association football accolade.

“I thank the fan club team, the users of DFB.de and all who have given me their vote,” Kroos said to DFB.de following his appointment. “The vote for the national player of the World Cup 2014 means a lot to me because it was accompanied by fans from all over the world. Actually, I’m not a big fan of individual awards, because we can only win as a team in our sport. Therefore, I would like to thank of course the whole team that has worked extremely well in the past 2014.”

Kroos managed to capture the domestic double with Bayern Munich and was a significant piece in Germany’s 2014 World Cup journey, most notably during his country’s 7-1 route of Brazil in the semifinal.

To date, Kroos has tallied nine goals in 57 appearances on his international side. This season at new club Real Madrid, he has totaled seven assists, good for second in the La Liga, and also has the best pass completion rate in the Spanish league.
