Toni Kroos could’ve been one of Bayern Munich’s greats had stayed longer at the Bundesliga club, but his contract was dwindling on one year, and after reports had linked him to Real Madrid and Manchester United, one could’ve guessed that he was primed to make his exit in the summer.
And Bayern Munich chairman Karl Hopfner just confirmed that Kroos didn’t want to remain at the side where he spent a year in the youth system before moving up to Bayern II and then to Bayern’s first team in 2007.“In the case of Kroos, the board of the club has taken the best decision,” Hopfner said. “After it had been impossible to sign an extension during the phase of negotiations, the board had to consider the intrinsic value.
“Toni Kroos did not want to sign a new deal, therefore he would have been a Bosman player in 2015.
“Because of this, a departure has been the right solution.”
The 24-year-old German made 130 appearances and scored thirteen goals for Bayern Munich from 2007 to 2013. He went on loan to Bayer Leverkusen in 2009, notching 10 goals in 43 caps and earning back-to-back player of the month awards.
Kroos didn’t score many goals for the Reds a season ago, but that’s not really his style of play, considering his top-quality technical quality that often makes him the assist man. Coupling his ability to distribute the ball well with pace, Real Madrid understood that he was someone they needed to supplement their attack, whether he was to act as a substitute or not.
