Ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid on Wednesday night, Steven Gerrard has admitted that he turned down the chance to move to Madrid earlier in his career and that he may regret doing so.

“I think it is very flattering to be linked to a huge club like Real Madrid,” Gerrard said Tuesday night.
“I have had a couple of options through my career to go to Real Madrid but I resisted temptation because of the feeling I had for my hometown club.

“It might be something I regret down the line for not challenging myself and experiencing another country but I would have had an even bigger regret leaving Liverpool. I had a great admiration for Madrid but for me Liverpool is my No 1 club.”

Having spent 16 years on the first-team at Liverpool, there’s little doubt of his place on the short-list of the best one-club players of all time. In the Premier League only Ryan Giggs, who spent 24 years at Manchester United, Paul Scholes, who spent 19 years at United, and Tony Adams, who patrolled Arsenal’s defense for 19 years, can boast more successful single club stints0

Liverpool currently sit third in Group B on three points, three shy of first-placed Madrid.
