Shakhtar Donetsk to honor the contract of Maicon despite death

Maicon

Ukranian giants Shakhtar Donetsk made all the right moves following the unfortunate death of one of their more promising attacking players.

After speaking very highly of the player on and off the pitch following his death, they have made another move to support his child and parents.

Despite no legal obligations on the matter, the club has decided to pay out in full the contract of Maicon Pereira de Oliveria to the player’s family family.

Maicon died in a car accident six days ago at the age of 25. He was on loan at fellow Ukranian club Illichivets Mariupol, for whom he had played 10 matches at the time of his death.

The club issued a statement detailing their decision, with club CEO Sergei Palkin saying,

“The contract with Maicon was valid through mid-2015. From a legal point of view, in such situations it expires. But Maicon has had a 7-year-old daughter and quite elderly parents left. Therefore, the president of the club decided to hand his family the amount stipulated by the contract, in full, to support his family at this difficult time.”

The event clearly affected the club deeply, and Palkin spent some time discussing the matter in his most recent press conference, with the CEO giving an overriding feeling that “no one is immune to accidents” and it was that particular feeling that assisted the club in their decision to help the family.

It’s a truly commendable decision, and hopefully one that may set a precedent throughout the sports world in similar tragic matters.
