LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane has hinted he may be open to a move away from the club, saying he’ll keep his options open this off-season and that “sometimes change is good.”
Keane has one year left on the five-year contract he signed with the Galaxy back in 2011. Since then he’s scored 69 goals in all competitions with the Galaxy, the most recent coming in last Sunday’s MLS Cup final where he was named Most Valuable Player.
“I definitely need to recharge the batteries and see what the next chapter is for me, whether it’s here or it’s somewhere else,” Keane said on Monday night, according to MLSsoccer.com.
“I’m not saying I’m going to leave, but what I’m saying is I need to consider what I want to do, you know? Sometimes change is good for everybody.”
Keane went on to say that he’ll be making that decision after a well-earned vacation.
“First and foremost, I’ve got to worry about myself,” he said. “I have to worry about what I’m going to do. I’ve had a tremendous four years here. I need a vacation and see what next year holds for me first. I’ll look at that first and see what’s best for Robbie Keane instead of worrying about anybody else.
“I’ll take a vacation, and then I’ll see what I want to do first.”
Galaxy coach Bruce Arena was quick to dismiss the notion of Keane leaving, saying he doubts that would happen before asking: “Where do you think he’s going?”
Orlando City has two DP spots up for grabs while New York City Football Club has one, both viable options for the Irishman. Of course, the more likely scenario is that the Irishman is merely posturing for a new deal with the Galaxy. Stay tuned.
