Report: Houston Dynamo the front-runner to land Erick ‘Cubo’ Torres

The Houston Dynamo has emerged as the front-runner for the services of former Chivas USA star Erick ‘Cubo’ Torres, according to a report from Goal USA.

The report states that both the LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders have passed on the opportunity to acquire the Mexican striker, leaving the door open for Houston. And walk through it they did, reportedly proving they have the resources and willingness to cough up the $7.5 million necessary to acquire the 21-year-old.

Prior to the 2014 MLS season Torres joined Chivas USA from Chivas Guadalajara on a loan with an option to buy. The option fell to LA and Seattle, who both passed, before Houston allegedly confirmed their desire to pull the trigger.

According to Goal, MLS is still working to finalize the full transfer and there may be some more negotiating to go as Torres could play for Guadalajara in exchange for the lowering of the $7.5 million purchase option. Speculation is that Torres would play in Mexico later this winter and into the spring before returning to MLS.

Torres is largely considered one of the best young talents in MLS. This past year he netted 15 times and notched two assists in 28 matches with Chivas USA, earning him his first call-ups to the Mexican national team. Landing a star like Torres would be a huge coup for the Dynamo, who recently began the rebuilding process by hiring former Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle.
