Laurent Blanc just extended his contract at Paris Saint-Germain just three months ago, but apparently that hasn’t stopped his bosses from trying to replace him.
According to a report by Yahoo! Sports, PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi is in talks with Diego Simeone, currently with Atletico Madrid, about taking over in Paris.
Al-Khelaifi said in an interview with Le Parisien earlier Thursday, “If we continue like this, we will not get there [to win the Champions League]. This is the time to change.”
That could spell doom for Blanc, who has presided over a steady but slow rise. The club has dominated domestically in historic fashion, but has hit a wall in Champions League play, with elimination coming in the quarterfinal round each of the past three seasons. Le Parisien also speculated in its article that Blanc could be on the outside looking in.
Back in February, Blanc signed a two-year contract extension with PSG, saying, “It’s a strong show of faith, and I’m very happy, also for my staff. A coach is nothing without his staff. For us, continuing the adventure is a show of faith but also a big responsibility.”
Simeone has been a revelation at Atletico Madrid. He’s brought them to the Champions League final two of the past three years, and won the La Liga title in the 2013/14 season, breaking the chokehold Barcelona and Real Madrid had on the Spanish league.
