Second-half goals from Yerson Candelo and Edgar Benitez led Queretaro to a 2-0 win in the first leg of a CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal at Estadio La Corregidora on Tuesday.

Early corners came DC United’s way, and Steve Birnbaum nearly headed home in the 4th minute.

Lucho Acosta finally opened up a chance worth watching in the 39th minute, as the MLS newcomer belted a shot that was parried right to Fabian Espindola. Sadly, the rebound was flubbed.

Jonathan Bornstein had a decent chance for the home side, which struggled to find a flow. To be fair, so did the visitors.

The pace picked up in the second half, or at least the action, as Taylor Kemp dribbled in from the left wing and pinged a rocket off the crossbar.

And then, the goal. It was a 71st minute spinning beauty, too, one that fooled Andrew Dykstra from 20 yards out. Maybe Bill Hamid makes the stop, but it was 1-0 Queretaro either way.

Another disappointing moment in defense came when a mistimed headed clearance helped a pass to reach Benitez, who beat Dykstra near post.
