What is Premier League Boxing Day?
December 26 is a famous day in the sporting calendar in the UK, as the day is a national holiday and sport dominates what is going on.
Horse racing, cricket (outside the UK), rugby and football are front and center and it’s a special time of the year with bumper crowds, as families and friends all gather and go to games together.
Why is Boxing Day called Boxing Day?
It’s said that Boxing Day received it’s name quite literally because it is a “day where people would receive a box of gifts” to thank them for their work all year. Seriously.
It always falls on December 26 each year and as for Boxing Day history, in the UK it has been a national holiday since 1871. It is said that in the Victorian era Christmas gift boxes were handed out to staff from their employers as they were thanked for their work throughout the year. They also were given the day off.
Why do they play football on Boxing Day?
Since 1958 Boxing Day has been the main festive day which football has been played on throughout the leagues in the UK. And that tradition stuck.
It is a national holiday in the UK so most people are off work and will enjoy going to football with friends and families. Boxing Day is also like a mini-Christmas Day celebration in the UK with feasts, drinks and get together’s planned for December 26.
