There’s “banter,” and then there’s what Arda Turan’s Atletico Madrid teammates decided to do for the Turkish midfielder’s birthday, which is this Friday, Jan. 30.

Following Turan’s shocking outburst during Wednesday’s Copa del Rey quarterfinal second leg against Barcelona, in which he hurled one of his boots at an assistant referee in a fit of rage, Turan’s teammates helped the boot-chucker celebrate his 28th birthday in the only fitting way, given recent events: with a boot-themed birthday cake, featuring a miniature recreation of the now-infamous boot toss. One slight issue: the cake should have been white and neon yellow, just like the boot in question.
Turan is definitely smiling in the above photo, so it’s probably fair to assume that he’s taking his teammate’s gag in stride. Chances are, however, Diego Simeone won’t find it quite as funny once Turan’s presumed retrospective punishment is handed down.
