Pele moved to “special care” unit as treatment continues

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pele

In this Wednesday, April 2, 2014 photo, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pele, is interviewed at The Associated Press in New York. Pele is thinking back to his youth these days. In a little more than two months, the World Cup will be played in Brazil for the first time since 1950, when 9-year-old Edson’s father listened on the radio as Brazil lost the final round-robin game and the title 2-1 to Uruguay in Rio de Janeiro. One of the greatest, if not the greatest, players in history has been moved to a “special care” unit in The Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo.

Pele has been transferred to that unit after he underwent treatment for a urinary infection on Monday.

The Brazilian legend, 74, has been struggling since he was hospitalized earlier this week and was diagnosed with a “clinical instability” as he was shifted to the specialist area of the hospital.

This news comes just two weeks after Pele was released from hospital after having kidney stones removed and it is believed that he could have picked up an infection while undergoing that procedure.

Reports had suggested that Pele was in intensive care, but Brazilian journalists have since discovered that he is instead in the special care unit which is a lot less serious.

Pele holds the world record for the highest number of goals scored. The three-time World Cup winner scored 1,281 goals in 1,363 games during his 21-year career and was named the FIFA Player of the Century after scoring 77 goals in 91 caps for Brazil.

Let’s all wish one of the greatest players the planet has ever seen a speedy recovery.
