El Tri nearly escaped with an incredible last-minute miracle, as Guillermo Martinez was kicked down in the penalty area by Felix Torres in the 96th minute, handing Mexico one shot from 12 yards for a place in the knockout rounds. However, after further video review, it was clear that even though Torres made contact with Martinez’s leg, it played no part in him going to ground. Martinez embellished the contact to the nth degree.
Mexico scored their only goal and picked up their only win against Jamaica, who were beaten by all three teams in the group. Jaime Lozano’s tenure as Mexico manager might be very short-lived, June 2023 to June 2024.
