Manchester United are anxiously awaiting an update on Robin van Persie’s ankle injury.

Van Persie, 31, is United’s joint-top scorer this season with 10 goals but he left the Liberty Stadium on crutches on Saturday following the Red Devils’ 2-1 defeat to Swansea City.

Louis van Gaal gave no updates on RVP’s situation following the game in south Wales on Saturday, but reports suggest van Persie is having a scan on Monday to assess the damage to his right ankle. RVP left the stadium on crutches and with a protective boot on his right foot.

With Wayne Rooney playing in a deeper midfield role and Radamel Falcao continuing to fire blanks, United have still relied heavily on their veteran Dutch striker this season. Van Persie has scored 10 goals in 24 PL matches, but has scored just twice in his last nine matches in all competitions.

After their defeat to Swansea on Saturday, United slipped to fourth place, one point behind third-placed Arsenal, as the race for a top four finish intensifies. The Red Devils have 47 points, then come Southampton on 46, Liveprool have 45 and Tottenham are on 44.

If United are going to finish the last 12 games strong, they’ll need all of RVP’s experience and nous in and around the box. Early reports suggest that the Dutch forward is unlikely to play in United’s home game against Sunderland next Saturday, Feb. 28.
