Luton Town 1-5 Brentford: Bees buzz to likely safety

It could’ve been a huge day for Luton Town’s Premier League safety hopes, but Brentford instead took all the stability from Kenilworth Road in a 5-1 blowout win on Saturday.

Yoane Wissa scored twice and Bryan Mbeumo had two assists, while Ethan Pinnock, Keane Lewis-Potter, and Kevin Schade also had goals to move 10 points clear of the bottom three. The Bees’ 35 points are good for 14th place.

Luton had hope of moving clear of the bottom three before Nottingham Forest and Everton played Sunday at Goodison Park, but instead remain a point back of 17th.

Luke Berry scored late for the Hatters, who have played one more game than Forest and two more than Everton.

Course correction

Luton have played above their level given all the long-term injuries on the newly-promoted side.

Brentford have missed a great deal of time from attacking stars and under-performed their xG for most of the season.

Is it as simple to say that two dams broke at the same time on Saturday? We don’t think so.

Bryan Mbeumo was very good as Yoane Wissa hit 10 goals in a Premier League season and long-injured Kevin Schade made it goal contributions in consecutive weeks.

Even without Ivan Toney, this was a Brentford we’ve seen before and it further wore out an eroded Luton lineup.

The ball clanks off the cross bar and Brentford can’t do anything with the rebound.
