Liverpool is close to announcing the signing of Loris Karius, as the German goalkeeper has arrived in England to undergo a medical with the club.

Reports state the Reds will pay German club Mainz about $7 million for the 22-year-old shot-stopper.

A top-rated prospect as a youth, Karius spent two years with the Manchester City academy before being sold to Mainz in 2011.

This season with Mainz, Karius kept nine clean sheets as the club surprised many with a sixth-place finish. Their 42 goals conceded were the lowest mark in the league by a team outside the top-three.

In a poll conducted by Kicker in Germany, Bundesliga players voted Karius the league’s second-best goalkeeper of the season, behind only Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer.

Liverpool’s starting keeper Simon Mignolet signed a five-year extension with the club in January, but he will now face stiff competition for the starting spot come preseason. Coming off of a great campaign with Mainz and still just 22-years-old, Karius looks to be in Klopp’s plans for years to come.
