Julie Foudy selected as honorary Rose Bowl captain

Julie Foudy

Julie Foudy, a four-time All American at Stanford who went on to a Hall of Fame career in professional soccer and who still remains active in the game, will serve as an honorary Rose Bowl captain for her school.

Michigan State meets Foudy’s Stanford on Jan. 1 in the famous bowl game in the Rose Bowl.

The Rose Bowl in Pasadena – the stadium, that is – is surely a special place for Foudy; that’s where she and the other so-called “99ers” finished their triumphant 1999 Women’s World Cup run. Foudy started and went the whole way as the Americans beat China in the famous penalty kick tiebreaker.

She was capped 271 times for the United States. Foudy, elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2007, transitioned smoothly into a broadcast career, and also presides over her own Julie Foudy Leadership Academy.
