The Serie A table looks like someone took all the teams, stuck them in a dice roller, shook em up, and poured them out.
Atop the table is Inter Milan, who won 1-0 over Chievo Verona this morning as the club has won four straight to start the season, the first time since the 2002/03 season they’ve accomplished that.
Mauro Icardi scored the game’s only goal just before halftime as Roberto Mancini’s squad moved well atop the Serie A table with 12 points - nobody within five points of them, although five teams below them still have yet to play today.
The surprising part of this season has been the back line. Inter has conceded just a single goal in four league matches so far, on the road at Carpi in matchweek two. All four of their wins have come by a one-goal margin, with a clear emphasis on defensive solidity.
Could this mean better things to come for Inter this season? The Milan giants have struggled in recent years - alongside their Milan counterparts - finishing outside the league’s top four for four years running, with an eighth-placed finish last season. The fact both Inter and AC Milan are struggling at the same time has almost pushed the two into a race to see who can recover first, but also has forced the two clubs to be fiscally responsible in their rebuild.
The wildly successful back line that Mancini has used to start the season has been anchored by 23-year-old Columbian center-back Jeison Murillo, new this summer having come over from Granada. He has been partnered with Brazilian veteran Miranda and Chilean Gary Medel, and the combinations have worked wonders.
Can Inter maintain its success and hold off a number of relatively new faces atop the Serie A table? They get a true test over the next few weeks with Fiorentina, Sampdoria, and Juventus in their next three matches, a stretch which will likely signal how their season will truly progress.
