If you haven’t seen, Wolfsburg beat Bayer Leverkusen 5-4 in an instant Bundesliga classic earlier this weekend. Leverkusen came back from 3-0 down to level things at 4-4 before a fourth goal from Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost downed the hosts in the third minute of added time.
New to Wolfsburg, Andre Schurrle has had a pretty wild ride since arriving from Chelsea at the end of January. He picked up a pair of assists in the 3-0 win over Hoffenheim on debut, and then this game for the ages followed that.
“I have led 3-0 with Mainz before and ended up drawing 4-4 - and that was against Wolfsburg - but to win 5-4 is even crazier than that,” Schurrle told the German Football Association’s website. “I’ve never experienced such a crazy game. It’s pretty extraordinary in football to have so many goals going in at one end and the other.”
The 24-year-old had a number of chances to score himself, and while he failed to take those, the game still suits him.
“They were big chances which I would and should normally take so it is a shame of course, but that’s the way things are in football sometimes,” Schurrle said. “Sometimes they go in, sometimes they don’t. I’ll keep working and then the goals will come. I’m feeling good as part of this team. This is just the game I like - this quick, ambush-style counter-attacking. That’s where I can play to my strengths and dribble the ball fast. That’s exactly what I want. With the quality we’ve got in attack, it’s great fun.”
With Schurrle in the mix, Wolfsburg has one of the best attacks not just in the Bundesliga but in Europe. Kevin de Bruyne is in scorched-earth mode, and Dost is a goalscoring machine with eight in his last five appearances, and four goals in his last four even before the explosion this weekend. They bagged five goals on a team with a top-five defensive record in Germany.
Champions League play is essentially a given next season for Wolfsburg barring an unforseen collapse, and the rest of Europe better watch out.
