Manchester United 0-3 Bournemouth: Mistakes haunt Red Devils as Cherries feast

Bournemouth feasted on Manchester United errors to boast a famous 3-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday, denying new Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim in his bid for back-to-back wins in the Premier League.

WATCH FULL REPLAY

Dean Huijsen, Justin Kluivert, and Antoine Semenyo all scored as Bournemouth took a lead before the break and did not look back despite some bright, even dominant possession passages from the hosts.

The Red Devils out-attempted Bournemouth by nearly double but Kepa Arrizabalaga made five saves in the Cherries goal to deliver Andoni Iraola his eighth win of the PL season.

Bournemouth go fifth on 28 points, ahead of Aston Villa on goal differential and three points back of fourth-place Nottingham Forest.

United stay 13th with 22 points, three points off 10th place.

Sarcastic stats — New Man United goes old Man United

Ruben Amorim spoke about the mistakes and pivotal moments going against Manchester United, and that is not wrong. It’s also nothing new. Look at the numbers from this game and they are laden with dark humor as a black comedy continues around Old Trafford. The Red Devils had 60% of the ball and took 23 shots to Bournemouth’s 10. They won the expected goal scrap by more than one xG — 2.26-1.24. They also, as you’ll well know from getting this far in the post, that they lost 3-0. They lost by three! Unfortunately, that’s only mildly surprising. In fact, what’s dangerous to the Red Devils is that their fans may not even get to the numbers beyond the score line anymore. The expectation is now disappointment, and that may Amorim’s most difficult task in taking the proverbial poisoned chalice held by and taken from Erik ten Hag, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal, and David Moyes. Are there more? Maybe. The list is getting long and this writer’s getting weary. Amorim’s side look better than the opponents on a fairly regular basis. That and a trio of mental lapses will get you zero points and some bleak laughter.

Antoine Semenyo goal — Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth (63rd minute)

What a goal.

It’s lightning, all-hands-on-deck counter and it’s lethal from the Cherries.

Semenyo gets the ball to Evanilson who delivers perfect hold-up play, dribbling outside the 18 to allow his teammates to join the rush.

Dango Ouattara cues up Semenyo’s finish. It’s a brilliant bit of team work and Ruben Amorim is going to be furious.

Bournemouth penalty! Justin Kluivert goal — Man Utd 0-2 Bournemouth (61st minute)

Noussair Mazraoui brings down Justin Kluivert in the box.

Kluivert goes to the spot as the author of a hat trick of penalties a few weeks back.

He doesn’t miss.

Man United make attacking subs, looking more and more up for control

Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund enter for Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee in the 55th minute.

The Red Devils are pushing hard for an equalizer, and nearly get one over the line off a corner.

Lewis Cook clears a corner off the line to keep it 1-0.

Subs at the break for both

Lewis Cook is on for Adam Smith at the break, while Man United deploys Leny Yoro for Tyrell Malacia.

Malacia gave away the free kick that led to Bournemouth’s goal, but this could be pre-planned as well as the left back hasn’t played a lot this season and Yoro is slowly being bedded into more and more minutes.

Halftime — Manchester United 0-1 Bournemouth

Erik ten Hag’s seen this score line and performance before, but this time he’s somewhere else and it’s Ruben Amorim’s problem.

After a slow start, United have bossed this game aside from the set-piece goal. Yet, they trail.

Shots are 11-5 to United, who’ve produced 0.93 xG and only conceded 0.18.

The midfield battle has been intriguing, as Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo have risen to the early challenge laid down by Adams and Christie.

Dean Huijsen goal (video) — Man Utd 0-1 Bournemouth (29th minute)

Bournemouth has been bossing the midfield with Tyler Adams and Ryan Christie, and the latter’s service gets this game on the road.

A Tyrell Malacia foul on the touch line allows for a deep free kick, wide from the right.

Christie swings the ball toward the near post, where Dean Huijsen leaps to turn the header past Andre Onana.

Dean Huijsen guides his floating header into the back of the net to give the Cherries a 1-0 lead against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Cherries bright early

Old Trafford may not have expected this, as Bournemouth are holding around 60% possession and have lined up a dangerous free kick to no avail.

United have tested Kepa Arrizabalaga, though, who saved a Joshua Zirkzee shot set up by Kobbie Mainoo.

Man United lineup

Onana, Mazraoui, Maguire, Martinez, Dalot, Malacia, Ugarte, Mainoo, Amad, Fernandes, Zirkzee

Bournemouth lineup

Arrizabalaga, Kerkez, Smith, Zabarnyi, Huijsen, Christie, Adams, Kluivert, Ouattara, Semenyo, Evanilson

Manchester United vs Bournemouth preview — By Joe Prince-Wright

Manchester United host Bournemouth on Sunday hoping to make it back-to-back wins in the Premier League.

Ruben Amorim’s side lost 4-3 in the League Cup quarterfinals at Tottenham on Thursday as their squad is being stretched to its limits and the Portuguese coach is trying to keep things fresh by rotating heavily. In the Premier League they dug deep and secured an incredible late comeback win at Manchester City last Sunday. Amad Diallo stole the show late on and United were set up well defensively and were dangerous on the counter. They’ll look to keep that going but know high-pressing Bournemouth are in a good moment and are more than capable of putting them under severe pressure. Off the pitch the Marcus Rashford situation has taken a turn after he was left out of the squad at City and has since said he is ‘ready a new challenge’ as he is heading towards the exit door.

As for Bournemouth and Andoni Iraola, well, their fine season continues. They drew 1-1 at home with West Ham on Monday which was a bit of a disappointment. But Bournemouth are still punching well above their weight and sit just three points off the top four and are three points ahead of Man United going into this game. They are truly horrible to play against, in the most complimentary way, and Semenyo continues to be their dangerman in attack.
