Germany 2-0 Denmark: EURO 2024 hosts advance to QF on Havertz, Musiala goals

Denmark gave them a good fight and a real scare, but EURO 2024 hosts Germany are through to the quarterfinals after Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala each scored in a 2-0 victory in Dortmund on Saturday.

[ MORE: EURO 2024 schedule ]

Germany will face either Spain or Georgia (round of 16, Sunday) in Stuttgart for a place in the semifinals. Denmark depart EURO 2024 with back-to-back appearances in the knockout rounds, after reaching the semifinals and losing in extra time to England in 2021. Prior to that, Denmark hadn’t advanced out of their group since 2004.

Both sides had a goal taken off the board on Saturday (Nico Schlotterbeck for Germany; Joachim Andersen for Denmark), the latter of which effectively decided the outcome of the game. 44 seconds after Andersen’s strike (50th minute) was ruled out for being offside by a toe, Germany were awarded a penalty kick at the other end of the field. Left back David Raum’s cross clipped the hand of a Danish defender: Andersen. Havertz stepped to the spot and struck a pinpoint penalty to put German on top early in the second half.

In between the disallowed goals, the game was delayed for 25 minutes after lightning, heavy rain and hail moved into the area in the 35th minute.

Havertz should have made it 2-0 himself just six minutes. He was in on goal after beating two defenders with a clever flick and racing into the open field with only Kasper Schmeichel to beat, but his outside-of-the-foot finish went inches wide of the far post. Alas, no worries about the second goal, because Musiala also wriggled free in the 68th minute and beat everyone in a foot race, only he stuck the ball in the bottom corner for his third goal at EURO 2024 (level with Georgia’s Georges Mikautadze in the Golden Boot race).

Germany team news, focus

Nagelsmann’s side is very settled with Kroos, Gundogan and Musiala dominating midfield and Havertz and Wirtz flourishing in attack. In defense they have an issue with Jonathan Tah suspended for this game, so Nico Schlotterbeck is likely to start at center back. Fellow center back Antonio Rudiger looks to have recovered from a hamstring issue, which is a huge boost. Niclas Fullkrug continues to push hard for a starting spot as he has scored twice off the bench, including the late equalizer against Switzerland which led to Germany winning Group A.

Denmark team news, focus

The Danes will continue to go with the 3-5-2 formation they favor with Vestergaard, Christensen and Andersen solid as a rock at center back. Morten Hjulmand, who scored a screamer against England, is suspended so veteran Thomas Delaney could start in midfield. Wind and Hojlund need more service up top and Denmark have to create more chances in open play if they’re going to stun the hosts.

Germany vs Denmark prediction

It feels like Germany’s extra quality in attack will just get them over the line in this game. Denmark look solid defensively but Musiala, Kroos and Gundogan will unlock them at some point. Germany 1-0 Denmark.
