What if Fernando Torres never started scoring goals?
What if, instead, he was saving them?
According to the £50 million man, he was close to attempting a pro career between the sticks, until he took a shot to the moneymaker.
No, not his right foot. His face.
“I start playing as a goalkeeper, until I break my teeth doing a save,” Torres told Sky Sports News. “And my mother said ‘you want to play football, no more as a goalkeeper.’”
Smart move.
Turns out, he’s a pretty good striker. But it almost didn’t turn out that way.
The 29-year-old also said his form at Chelsea, which is nowhere near what it was during his time at Liverpool, is not a product of the price the Blues paid for his services.
“At the time the price is right. It’s like, if you want to sigh Gareth Bale now, you have to pay £100 million. Maybe you pay one more year, and maybe you pay £60 million or £150 million. Who knows? At the time the price is right. What Chelsea paid, it’s never been something I think about.”
Whether that’s the truth or not, it’s a perfectly valid point. People can debate a player’s value all they want, and whether a team should have paid more or less or got a good value. But ultimately the market determines a player’s worth, not the public.
