Borussia Monchengladbach have announced that it has signed United States international Fabian Johnson to a four-year-deal set to begin at the end of this season.
The news confirming Johnson’s transfer to Monchengladbach comes after weeks of speculation that the German-born player would leave Bundesliga side Hoffenheim this summer.
“We’ve fought for Fabian’s signature since the summer, but he has decided to leave us,” said Hoffenheim coach Markus Gisdol in early February.
Confirming the deal for Monchengladbach was director of sport Max Eberl. “Fabian Johnson is a very interesting player who can play attacking or defensive roles on either flank. He comes on a free transfer and we’re delighted he’s opted to join us.”
The 26-year-old began his professional career at Bundesliga 2 side TSV 1860 Munich in 2006 before moving on to top-tier Wolfsburg in 2009. After two years and 16 appearances for Die Wölfe, Johnson completed a transfer to Hoffenheim where he’s made 76 Bundesliga appearances, scoring four goals.
The move looks to be a bright one for Johnson as Monchengladbach have been working hard to strengthen a side that is currently in 6th place and in line for a Europa League spot. The full-back, who can also play in the midfield, has been capped 18 times for the United States and is expected to be a major factor in this summer’s World Cup.
