Everton have been handed a 10-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules.

The penalty will be applied during the current season, in which Everton sat 14th in the PL table with 14 points before Friday’s ruling. Now, the Toffees are 19th, two points off Luton Town in 17th.

Everton were referred to an independent commission in March over alleged breaches during the 2021-22 season. A hearing took place last month, and though the punishment could have alternatively been a fine or transfer embargo against Everton, the Premier League confirmed the points deduction — the heaviest given to a Premier League team — on Friday.

Premier League statement:

An independent Commission has imposed an immediate deduction of 10 points on Everton FC for a breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs).
