EURO 2024 Power Rankings
Those who crashed out at the group stage
24. Serbia - ELIMINATED - Even
23. Scotland - ELIMINATED - Down 2
22. Czechia - ELIMINATED - Down 3
21. Albania - ELIMINATED - Up 1
20. Hungary - ELIMINATED - Even
19. Ukraine - ELIMINATED - Down 4
18. Poland - ELIMINATED - Even
17. Croatia - ELIMINATED - Down 5
Out of the teams who were eliminated in the group stage, Scotland and Serbia were the biggest disappointments. Neither got going in the tournament and neither really looked like scoring often. As for the other eliminated teams, Hungary and Croatia were the biggest surprises as they both just missed out. The latter have come towards the end of their cycle as legendary players are close to retirement, while Hungary weren’t good enough defensively. Albania were plucky but overwhelmed. As for Ukraine, well, they were just unlucky as they didn’t reach the last 16 despite having four points, while Poland were also much better in their games than the one point they gained.
The upstarts who made the knockouts
16. Slovakia - Up 1
15. Slovenia - Up 1
14. Georgia - Up 9
13. Belgium - Down 2
12. Romania - Up 1
11. Turkiye - Down 1
Slovakia and Slovenia have been extremely robust and are fun to watch when they get flowing on the counter. Slovakia have a wealth of experience in their team, while Slovenia have Oblak and Sesko and look dangerous on the break. Georgia have been so fun to watch in their debut EUROs and making the last 16 is a huge achievement. Belgium have been extremely underwhelming so far (their fans let the players and coach know that) and unless De Bruyne and Lukaku can get them going against France, their Golden Generation may just be about to exit without a trophy. Romania have been so fun and committed and are a genuine surprise package and could go far, while Turkiye have scored some beauties and look like they will be dangerous in the last 16 against Austria.
The teams who could make a run but questions remain
10. Denmark - Down 2
9. Italy - Down 3
8. Netherlands - Down 1
7. Switzerland - Up 2
6. Portugal - Down 1
5. Austria - Up 9
Denmark, Italy and the Netherlands have all moved down our rankings as big questions remain. Where are the goals going to come from for reigning champs Italy and perennial overachievers Denmark? Can the Netherlands find a midfield balance which works and shields their defense? As for Switzerland, they look solid and could easily beat Italy in the last 16 as they have vast tournament experience, while Portugal can dazzle in spells but look a little suspect defensively on the counter. Austria have been the story of the tournament so far as Ralf Rangnick’s side have pressed high and been excellent on the ball when they’ve won it back. Can they go all the way to the final? Why not?
The favorites
4. England - Even
3. France - Even
2. Germany - Down 1
1. Spain - Up 1
Okay, so both England and France have been very underwhelming but both navigated the group stage undefeated. But France’s failure to win their group leaves them on the tougher side of the bracket and Didier Deschamps’ side look unsure in attack, perhaps due to Kylian Mbappe’s broken nose impacting their flow? England look similarly dishevelled in the final third as big players have yet to get going and although they look solid at the back, England haven’t really been tested. Germany have been very good in midfield and attack but at the back they were pulled apart a few times by Switzerland and that throws up a few questions about their ability to win it all on home soil. Then there is Spain. The only team with a perfect record in the group stage and they have been mesmerizing to watch. Defensively they haven’t really been tested so far but right now it’s hard to not call Spain the form team. They are on the tough side of the bracket so we’re about to find out just how solid their back line is. If they can withstand pressure, Spain can rip you apart going in the opposite direction.
