Erik ten Hag sees progress in 3-0 Man United win: ‘This is one step”

Erik ten Hag sat in the stands and got a full view of an otherworldly goal and a complete win.

Manchester United topped Everton 3-0 on Sunday at Goodison Park, taking a halftime lead on Alejandro Garnaco’s Goal of the Season candidate and then controlling the second 45 minutes to move sixth on the Premier League table.

“We have to go step by step,” he said. “This is one step.”

Ten Hag was serving a suspension but did speak after the game.

“The start of the game, very good,” Ten Hag said, via the BBC. “A very good team goal, the finish was incredible - world class. Probably already the goal of the season. Magnificent moment.”

Erik ten Hag reaction: Man Utd needs to keep foot on gas

It’s no surprise that he loved Garnacho’s goal but Ten Hag was less impressed by the first half as a whole. The Man United boss said he had words for his players at halftime.

“After the start of the game we were too easy-going. I criticized the team at half-time. They thought they were already there. You can’t do that. You have to do 100 minutes on the pitch. Second half we did very well. ... Our three offensive players scored. That’s what we need. It will help us as a team.”

Erik ten Hag reacts to Marcus Rashford’s emphatic penalty

The Red Devils led 1-0 when a VAR review of an incident between Anthony Martial and ex-United man Ashley Young sent them to the spot for a big chance to add to their lead.

Bruno Fernandes gave the ball to struggling Marcus Rashford, and the latter smashed home his spot kick. Ten Hag said Rashford will use that moment ‘a lot.’

“You see also how great captain Bruno is,” Ten Hag said. “He assessed his team-mate needed that goal. He has the confidence in Rashy, who is a good penalty taker. As a team you need that leadership that you back each other.”

Man United heads back to a beleaguered Champions League campaign that demands a win at Galatasaray on Tuesday. The Red Devils then go to Newcastle for a 10am ET Saturday kickoff.
