Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has reasserted his position that anywhere he plays next year will be as a starting goalkeeper.
“Do I want to number one wherever I play next season? Yes, I think with my age and the performances I had I want to play,” said Courtois from Brazil. “To be on the bench is not the nicest thing.”
Courtois is Belgium’s number 1 for the World Cup, and he says that while things are happening in Brazil, no movement will happen on his club future.
“When will I know about my future? It will be after the World Cup I think, then everything will be clear,” Courtois said.
The Belgian has a wealth of experience for a 22-year-old. Having spent three seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid, he became the keystone to their revival, winning the La Liga title and making the Champions League final, and now starting in the World Cup.
This has fueled much speculation about his future at Chelsea, with Petr Cech showing no signs of slowing down at 32 years old, by no means old for a modern goalkeeper.
But clearly Courtois will not be satisfied backing up the Czech veteran, and it’s also unlikely that Chelsea would be able to send their young prodigy out on loan for a fourth year in the row as one of the world’s best shot stoppers.
In the process of deciding his future, Courtois spoke with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho towards the end of the season, but according to the player very little was discussed.
“I spoke to him [Mourinho] in May, before the [title-deciding] game against Barcelona,” said Courtois. “In the week he discussed with me what he thinks about me and about everything. That is it.”
