Both Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed the clubs are in agreement on a deal that would send the Brazilian defender to the French capital.
There is no confirmed amount, but various reports have the transfer fee anywhere between $67 and $84 million, a massive total for yet another player Mourinho has considered to be surplus and yet sold for a massive total.
Luiz follows Juan Mata and Kevin de Bruyne as players who were on the fringes of Mourinho’s plans but garnered big fees for Chelsea.
The reported fee would likely make Luiz the most expensive defender in history.
The teams confirmed that the player still has yet to agree to personal terms with his new club, and a medical has yet to be completed.
ESPN’s Jonathan Johnson said the deal was completed swiftly because Luiz wanted to push it through before the World Cup started (and, presumably, Mourinho wanted to get things signed in ink before PSG changed their mind about that ridiculous total).
Luiz, who is currently in Brazil preparing for the World Cup, made 19 Premier League and eight Champions League appearances for Chelsea this past season.
He signed a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge in July of 2012.
Paris Saint-Germain were hit with sanctions by FIFA for violations of the new Financial Fair Play rules, but that didn’t stop them from making a historic purchase. They may be able to get around it, since the 2013/14 season doesn’t technically end until June 30. Their sanctions are for the 2014/15 season and beyond.
