Dyche’s Everton ride early goals to win at Burnley

The ‘Dyche derby’ went to the club currently employing the hard-nosed manager, as Everon beat Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor on Saturday.

Amadou Onana and Michael Keane scored — and Dwight McNeil registered another assist — as the Toffees pulled seven points clear of the bottom three. Everton fans won’t help but daydream of what this season would be if not for the 10-point deduction for sustainability breaches.

Burnley remain six points back of 17th place, now winless in three-straight matches.

Dyche shows Turf Moor a familiar act

For many years, pundits wondered what Sean Dyche’s Burnley would look like with a bigger budget.

And the post-Dyche takeover of the club started to show us a bit of it. New boss Vincent Kompany rampaged the Championship with fantastic football, and ascended to the Premier League with a lot of hope while former boss Sean Dyche was predicted by some to have as many face palms as wins at Everton.

Nope.

The only thing keeping Dyche’s Everton from a European charge right now is their 10-point deduction, as the players who know his system front-to-back — Dwight McNeil, James Tarkowski — have been joined by prototypical Dyche players in forming a team that no one will relish seeing on their docket.

Everton’s sixth in expected points, sixth in xGA, and eighth in xG. Those numbers will sink a little by the end of the matchweek, but Dyche would be front-runner for Manager of the Year in a world without Ange Postecoglou. Then again, he probably likes it this way.

What’s next?

Burnley heads to Fulham at 10am ET Saturday, December 23, while Everton hosts Fulham in the League Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday before going to Tottenham on Dec. 23.

Burnley focus, team news

Burnley remain in the bottom three of the Premier League but they’ve shown enough so far this season to suggest they can hang in there and fight to stay in the league. They’ve won just twice and are five points off safety as a win in this game against Everton would put them just two points behind the Toffees. Kompany’s side are struggling for goals and the duo of Koleosho and Foster being out is a big blow but teenager Wilson Odobert scored against Brighton last time out and looks a real talent. Defensively they have improved and if the Clarets can cut out mistakes they will pick up points. But they have to start picking up more points at home as we are in mid-December and Burnley have just three points to their name at Turf Moor. That is one of the biggest surprises of the season so far.

OUT: Luca Koleosho (knee), Lyle Foster (personal), Jack Cork (calf), Charlie Taylor (suspended) | QUESTIONABLE: Josh Cullen (knock), Aaron Ramsey (knee)

Everton focus, team news

Dyche has the trio of Dwight McNeil, Jack Harrison and Abdoulaye Doucoure purring in attack in support of Dominic Calvert-Lewin as Everton’s midfield runners are causing all kinds of problems for opponents. Defensively they have been solid as they haven’t conceded in three-straight wins against Nottingham Forest, Newcastle and Chelsea. They do have to cope with suspensions to Branthwaite and Gueye for yellow card accumulation so their defensive unit will look a little different this weekend with Amadou Onana and Ben Godfrey set to come in.

OUT: Dele Alli (groin), Idrissa Gana Gueye (suspended), Jarrad Branthwaite (suspended) | QUESTIONABLE: Seamus Coleman (undisclosed), Andre Gomes (calf), Ashley Young (knock)
