Aston Villa 0-0 Juventus: The stoppage-time winner that wasn’t

Aston Villa will feel Juventus robbed them of two points at Villa Park on Wednesday, as their stoppage-time winner was ruled out for a questionable foul against the goalkeeper, instead settling for a 0-0 draw.

Diego Carlos was the one who was deemed to have fouled Michele Di Gregorio as a floated cross came down at the back post. Carlos and De Gregorio both went straight up and came together in the air, but the keeper’s reach was weak and the ball glanced off his hand rather than claiming it. Morgan Rogers pounced on the rebound, turned and fired home from close range, but the whistle went immediately. Video review upheld the ruling on the field.

The draw will be a tough pill for Villa (9th - 10 points) to swallow, as a win would have put them 5th in the Champions League table and in line for bye in the first knockout round as one of the top-8 finishers in the new format. Juventus (8 points) sit 19th with three games left to play. The top 24 sides advance to the knockout rounds.

Aston Villa team news, focus

Defensive injuries have been a concern for Villa in recent weeks and Emery is struggling to get the right combinations and rotation of his squad. Jacob Ramsey is still out, while the trio of Ezri Konsa, Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana are all pushing to be available for this game. Emery is likely to bring Cash and Digne back in to start at full back and don’t be surprised if Tyrone Mings starts at center back and Jhon Duran could start up top to support Watkins.

Juventus team news, focus

Juventus are suffering an injury crisis, with eight first team players out for this game. Left back Juan Cabal is out with an ACL injury and has had surgery, while star strikers Dusan Vlahovic and Arkadiusz Milik are both out. USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie is out after suffering an injury against AC Milan, while Douglas Luiz has been struggling with form and fitness and is unlikely to make a return to Villa. Center back Bremer and winger Nico Gonzalez are both out too. All of this means Juve are the underdogs for this trip to Villa and they’d be delighted with a draw.
