According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal sent stewards into the stands during today’s 4-1 win over Galatasaray to confiscate an anti-Arsene Wenger banner.
The report fails to go into any detail as to when the banner was confiscated or how the club could have managed to do so considering the game was at the Turk Telekom Arena in Instanbul, a place where they surely lack the authority to do so.
Nevertheless, the article is indicative of just how crazy things have gotten between Arsenal fans and their under fire manager. The first Anti-Arsene banner appeared this season during the West Brom match on November 29th, kicking off what has become a grass-roots push to oust the long time manager.
“Wenger Out” banners have since been seen readily at Gunners matches and following this past weekend’s 3-2 loss at the hands of Stoke City, the pressure escalated when fights erupted between pro and anti-Wenger fans. Later that day internet footage went viral detailing angry Arsenal fans hurling verbal abuse at Wenger as he boarded a train home to London.
With the impressive performance tonight in the 4-1 win over Galatasaray, the anti-Wenger sentiment should subside, at least briefly. The Gunners host Newcastle this Saturday at 12:30 pm ET on NBC.
