Tottenham now have just one win from their last seven Premier League games after giving up a late lead and drawing Wolves 2-2 in north London on Sunday.
SPURS 2-2 WOLVES - Highlights, recap & analysis
Ange Postecoglou’s side had to battle back themselves after going behind 7 minutes in, but they did so through Rodrigo Bentancur and Brennan Johnson before halftime. Another defensive injury (Destiny Udogie - hamstring) began the unraveling shortly after the restart, and by the end it was all Wolves as they chased — and eventually got — an equalizer. Another valiant effort for a side that finished the game with just two healthy first-team defenders.
Ange Postecoglou reaction — What did Tottenham boss say after draw with Wolves?
Postecoglou revealed to Sky Sports how much Spurs’ recent poor run is hurting him.
“It hurts me as I’m responsible,” Postecoglou said. “When I see how hard the players are trying, it hurts even more. I wanted them to get rewards for their effort. It hurts immensely. It’s my responsibility for where we’re at right now.“
“I’ll keep going mate, we’ve got work to do in getting some help with these players. Our role is to help them perform to their best. I can see how hard they’re trying. If we were at our sharpest we’d have got that third and fourth goal, we were inches away.
“We are lacking the dynamic movement we need. Where does Deki [Kulusevski] get the energy from? Dom [Solanke], Sonny. These guys are fighting energy and aren’t as sharp as we can be.
“We’re dealing with a fair bit and we’re not getting a smooth run at anything in terms of getting players back to allow us to freshen up the team. When we get one back, we lose one.”
“It’s a disappointing outcome. Obviously we went a goal down, but after that I felt we controlled the game. It wasn’t easy always to get openings, but we did look pretty threatening every time we did get forward. We scored a couple of goals, we obviously missed the penalty and then second half, I just thought we had some really big moments to kill the game off.
“They weren’t really creating much. I mean I think Fraser had one save to make with his feet, and that was about it. You felt we kind of needed that third goal and obviously they score at the end and you’re kind of left with a disappointing outcome, but it’s not through the want of trying. It’s obvious, you know, the lads are fairly fatigued — especially in that front third, we’re not as sharp as we can be, which is understandable because we’re asking a lot of a sort of small core group of players and, as I said, it’s not for the want of trying. They’re trying to get the outcomes for us.”
…
“We’re asking a lot of a small core group of players. The whole group probably needs a couple of days to get away and recover. It has been really intense for a core group of players. It will do them good to go away with their families to recover mentally as much as physically.”
Postecoglou on Destiny Udogie’s injury
“I think it was a hamstring. Again like I said, we’ve been relying on a core group of players because we just haven’t had the ability to rotate, so at some point it was going to catch up with us. Unfortunately, it caught up with Destiny.”
Postecoglou on Radu Dragusin playing through an ankle injury
“Well, we had no choice. If Radu doesn’t play, I don’t know who plays. He wasn’t 100 percent, but he felt he could get through with his ankle and again, I think the players are all giving everything they can at the moment. Unfortunately, we can’t give them what they really need, and that is some recovery and rest because we’ve got so many players out. But, Radu wanted to play today and while he wasn’t 100 percent, we had no choice [but] to put him out there.”
